Why do OSU fans dispise the Big East?

Please take Notre Dame off of any list attempting to validate strength of schedule. And yes, that counts for MSU, Purdue and Michigan as well. The Irish are more of a patsy than all the Kent States or East Carolinas in the world.

I think the main thing here is you are reading too much into threads regarding WVU's ranking, they are ranked over tOSU, not because they are considered the better team, but because of the time of the loss. If WVU played the bucks on a neutral field, who would be favored? If the NC comes down to WVU vs LSU I will be rooting for you, but until the big game, I am rooting for everyone who plays the 4 teams in front of us that I need to lose in order for us to make that game. It's not against the big east, it's not against WVU, it's for the Buckeyes.

Cant argue there OC....I do the same thing. Nothing against LSU, Kansas, but i hope they lose, for the Mountaineers sake....

Oh10....Yes, i know Notre Dame sucks....but they have the #1 recruiting class coming in, lets give big man a little more time. until then, yes, they suck badly. and as always, when teams play them, it looks good because they are Notre Dame....

As for the Slaton/Mike HArt doak walker comment. I didnt understand that either. I was kinda shocked Steve didnt make the list. He hasnt had a great season, but he also gets about 15 carries a game. A LOT less than other big named RB's....but thats ok, Im sure Steve doesnt care about that anyways. Although you would like to think hes in the top 15 running backs int he country.....

No, they suck. Jabba the Weis sucks. It's not recruiting. It's coaching.

Don't buy the hype, there's a lot of people who haven't yet committed, and the Irish will not be ranked #1 at the end. I won't take anything away from scheduling them, however, having a coach who can recruit is one thing, having a coach that can develop is another.

I agree OC. Look at Wanny from Pitt. great recruiter, shitty coach.

That gives me an idea.

If Pitt plays Notre Dame,

it could be called "Toilet Bowl: The Coaches Version."

Also, that UL-Monroe loss had me wondering:

This is what Rich Rodriguez could have gone for?

Boy, does he look smart now.

My issue is not with the Big East. My issue is with the media. The Big Ten gets hammered and called 'slow'. The Big East gets love and called 'surprising.'

You wouldn't know it watching too much ESPN, but the Big Ten is actually better than the Big East. There's a reason why teams like Rutgers, South Florida, Connecticut and Shitcinnati are seemingly becoming good programs. It's because they play in the Big East. If they walked a mile in the Big Ten, they'd be battered and bruised.

That's not necessarily an indictment of West Virginia. That's a good ball team. But if Ohio State's schedule gets ripped by the media, where's the criticism for the 'Neers schedule?
The middle paragraph is SPOT ON. Cincinnati is growing into a more dangerous program, and can hang with teams on a single game basis, but over the course of the season their kids would struggle with the grind of a b10 season.

Cinci is well coached enough to nip a top-10 team anyday. But can a roster of many undersized kids handle banging against Penn State, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio State, Illinois during a season, and still execute well enoguh after those brutal beatings on their body?

The few big east teams which feature big time athletes do so on only one side of the ball, imo... and not with anywhere near the depth of the big boys.

Generally speaking:
WVU has a prolific running offense (including horizontal passing), but questionable defense. I don't buy the big east driven stats for the WVU def this year... but their O will keep them in any game.
Louisville usually has a great offense and no defense.
Cincinnati has undersized talent, but are well coached above their ability.
Rutgers, if not for their cinderella 06 season, would not be acknowledged.
How many teams have better incoming talent than Uconn? 50? 80? More?
USF, for as well as their D played vs WVU, their O was equally bad IMO. This was not a fluke, but a trend.
Pitt is endlessly mediocre.

Hrm... I don't dislike the big east so much as I think the conference in general isn't very defensive. They have great offensive teams, but seem to live by the motto of "the best defense is a good offense." There's always some big east team that's going to win it all, then they run into a team with a half-assed defense and they get shut down.
Where do we see sound defense these days? Outside of the Buckeyes, of course, and maybe Kansas or Okla. And there's no lights out defense this year like Oklahoma '00 or OSU '02...

Agree that the level of defensive play is down this year. [strike]OSU is leading the nation in scoring defense with a number that would not have come close to leading in most years.[/strike] EDIT: I did some checking, and OSU's defense is right in line with nation-leading defenses for the last 8 seasons. And feel free to be less kind with Kansas in the future. They have played no one; Chase Daniel will light them up big-time. The only hope Kansas has is to outscore them (which they might because Missouri's defense isn't any better).

[captain obvious]In the happy event that a couple or three key people make good on hints that they will come back next year; OSU's defense will be an all-timer in 2008.[/captain obvious]

I don't dispise the Big East, mostly because I don't know what dispise means. Is it like despise?
Anyways, I nothing the Big East.
Ohio State would beat the shit out of every Big East team pretty much every year. The Big East is an upper-mid-major conference whose teams simply aren't that good. Some of them are fun to watch, some of them lose to Syracuse and one of them is Syracuse. I think the BE is solidly between the 4 real conferences and the rest of the country (alongside the ACC).

I think that the vitriol for the BE comes from the fact that they're a BCS conference, yet lack any traditional powers. WVU has a good history, but it's not Oklahoma, USC, Ohio State, or Alabama. It's got schools like UConn, which has hardly been playing D1A for a decade, if I am not mistaken, along with fellow newcomer USF, then Rutgers, Louisville, and Cincy, who spent the 20th century every bit as forgotten as your average MAC school. There's nothing about the Big East's BCS status that was earned by any of the teams there now other than WVU. Former members Miami, VT and BC gave the conference nearly all of it's rep previously. Pitt hasn't been even decent since what, 1980? Syracuse had their last good run with Jim Brown.

Honestly, and I don't mean this as any knock on you or your team, because WVU is the class of the conference -- too good for it really -- I just don't see what makes the BE any more deserving of BCS status than C-USA or MWC. Does any current member of the conference have a national title within the past 25 years (or ever)? Does any current member of the conference have a Heisman Trophy winner ever? Pitt is the only answer to either of those questions.

Around here, we believe in a continuing tradition of excellence. The Big Ten has that. Within the past 25 years, Ohio State, Penn State and Michigan (Penn State was not a conference member at the time, however) have all won or shared titles. If we go back 50 years, we can add Michigan State, Minnesota, and potentially Iowa (depends on what titles you acknowledge). What do the current BE teams claim over those years?

Again, your Backyard Brawl partners, Pitt. That's all.

As far as Heismans, the Big Ten can claim 8 since 1970. Current BE members? One. Tony Dorsett for Pitt.

Why is the BE a BCS conference? Why do we have to deal with this fiction every year of the equal opportunity media trying to rank so many BE leaders in the top ten or top 25? For cryin' out loud, South Florida got up to #2 this season! Tell me that wasn't a joke. That bubble popped. Louisville also? Popped. UConn and Rutgers have also had their stays in the top 25. Cincy got in this year. Who's left?? Only poor Syracuse. Can you honestly say that pretty much the entire conference has deserved to get ranked in the top 25 at one point or another this year?

Now let's talk bowl wins. WVU is carrying the banner there with the only BCS bowl win out of your current conference members. It was a good one. Again, your team is legit. The rest of your conference has only one other appearance -- a loss by Pitt. Edit: Sorry, left out a win by Louisville and a loss by Syracuse.

I have a hard time seeing exactly what I should be respecting about the BE as a BCS conference, other than WVU's modern day track record and Pitt's run from the mid 70's to about 1980. You guys did get screwed with Miami, VT and BC bolting the conference, and I have huge respect for the fact that it even survived. That was a dirty deal all the way around, and I'm enjoying how the ACC "superconference" is a mere shadow of it's former hype. Miami can't lose often enough to make me happy.

Personally, I can't stand the BCS system, and I think that the BE is benefitting from a contract signed when it was a different product. If we had a true playoff system, plus a requirement that so-called major conference teams had to schedule another in the regular season, then I wouldn't have any issue whatsoever with the BE. You all would earn your respect on the field, and not because of talking heads or your commissioner hyping your conference beyond all comprehension. I think that your future schedules are a big step in the right direction, and I'll give credit there where it's due.

Oh, and your conference's Heisman commercial didn't help the perception of the BE as a wanna-be major at all.

Anyway, good luck to your Mountaineers in their likely BCS appearance, unless you draw Ohio State. The win over Georgia was one of my very favorite games that year because it shut a lot of people up. Really, I would like to see some teams from your conference step up and score some big, important OOC or bowl wins. Show the world that you deserve BCS status.

Either that, or get WVU the heck out of there and into a real football conference.

Edit: To be fair in the BCS bowl comparison, here's the records for every B10 team to appear in a BCS bowl --

Wisconsin 2-0
Penn State 1-0
Ohio State 4-1
Michigan 1-3
Illinois 0-1
Iowa 0-1

Six total teams, with a combined record of 8-6.

You're forgetting Louisville's unforgettable win over Wake Forest.
How'd you do that, it was unforgettable?

I have nothing against the Big East. I really don't get too involved in the whole conference debate thing since it's all subjective. Besides, nothing I say will change anybody's mind. The only time I'll bust on a conference is when I'm talking college football to buddies of mine who like teams from other conferences, and then it's in good fun.

That being said, I can't for the life of me figure out why WVU is ahead of OSU. Don't get me wrong, WVU is one hell of a team and I absolutely love watching them play. Their offense is a thing of beauty, and their defense is echelons better than what it was a year ago. But still, for as much crap as Ohio State gets for its schedule (and rightfully so), WVU's is even worse.

We had our shot, though. All we had to do was take care of business in our house against Illinois. If we don't make it to the MNC, I'll shrug my shoulders and hope for next year. I'll then get ready for a hell of a Rose Bowl game.
