Three years ago, we did a series of polls in which the BP community selected the "Greatest Buckeye Ever" team. Since then, many more great players have passed through the Woody Hayes Athletic Center, so it's probably a good time to revisit the polls.

Every week, we will post a poll on "Who's the Greatest Buckeye" at each of the positions. The first poll, quarterback, will open today, and run for a month.

All players selected for the poll will be from the "modern era", which we have more-or-less arbitrarily determined to have begun with the hiring of Woody Hayes in 1951. However, there will be a special poll for the older Buckeye stars, where you will be allowed to choose amongst such greats as Les Horvath, Vic Janowicz, Chic Harley, etc.

Please vote on each poll, if you can. Also, please note that each poll will allow you to vote at least twice, as we would like to compile a first and second team. If you vote for "other", please let us know your selection(s) by setting forth the name(s) in a post.

Polls will be posted as follows:

1. Quarterback
2. Multi-purpose player
3. Tailback
4. Fullback
5. Wide Receiver
6. Tight End
7. Offensive Tackle
8. Offensive Guard
9. Offensive Center
10. Defensive Tackle
11. Defensive End
12. Outside Linebacker
13. Middle Linebacker
14. Safety
15. Cornerback
16. Kicker
17. Punter
18. "Old Timer"
19. Head Coach

So, please vote now for your All-Time Greatest Buckeye Quarterback; please make TWO selections.

Thanks for your participation.

If Troy just would have brought home that NC this would be a complete no brainer.

As it is you still have to give consideration to Rex and CK.

I'll probably still go with Troy but I'm going to have to mull it over.

Only one Buckeye QB ever won the Heisman Trophy. The NC is important, obviously. But even the best QB can't do it alone.

IMO the Heisman is almost as much a team award as the NC. Like i said, I'll probably go with Troy but that missing NC at least opens up some debate.

With his Heisman, his Vulvarien slaying and a NC its not even a question. I think the first 2 still make him the GOAT at QB but its not as crystal clear as it could be, at least to me.

I always ask myself the same question when I think of a GOAT, if I could pick one of these guys to always come back and play that position at OSU year in and year out who would it be?

Would you want TS to be the OSU QB every year, Rex or maybe even CK? Or how about Art S at QB with JT's coaching and the level of overall talent we have in place now that he never had?

Troy Smith - Hands down the best. May not have one the big one, but his leadership, taking on the JT roll, his second-chance story, and his raw ability (only Buckeye QB to win the Heisman) seperate him.

Joe Germaine took my second vote.

Or even Germaine and Hoying, each of whom also came pretty darn close to winning an NC even with suspect coaching.

I voted for Krenzel (NC, perfect season) and Smith (Heisman, many records), with Kern coming in a close third (even though he won an NC and led the Buckeyes to 27-2 overall record, QB play wasn't quite as important back in the late 60's as it is today; Kern's teams also lost two NC's that they really should have won).

Troy will win, but my vote is for Rex!! I know he was in a different era, and did it against different competition, but if anyone reseraches his stats you will find that he was nasty, 27-2 as a starter, three year starter, heisman winner, and the all important National Championship.

I believe Troy was 25-3 as a starter.

Smith and Kern.

It tore at me to not be able to vote for Corny Greene, whom I'd place ahead of Krenzel. As a starter, he lost 3 games in 3 years, and lost the NC in '73 when he couldn't throw because of a broken thumb in the 10-10 tie at AA.

.

Rex's best Heisman finishes were 3rd in '69, and 5th in '70.
