Man, I guess 2003 is really over after all. We all know the multiple area's OSU struggled in last year ie offense, kick returns, penalties, turnovers so when you look at the numbers from the UC game it really makes me feel good.

I don't want to read too much into just one game but UC's strength was defense and with Dantonio over there I feel that was a more than fair test of our young offense's abilities.

OSU vs UC
27 points
21 first downs
43 rushes for 220 (5.1 ypc)
16/29 for 242 yds passing
462 yds total offense on 72 plays (6.4 ypp)

2 penalties for 20 yds

1 punt for 57 yds!!!!! (only 1 punt  )

2 kick returns for 84 yds (42 ypr)

6 of 13 on 3rd down conversions (46%)

Still have some work to do:
4 fumbles/1 lost
2 INT thrown

vs

0 turnovers forced by OSU

If they can come close to this consistently we are going to roll some people.

43 rushes for 220 (5.1 ypc)

Take away that 68 run by Ross, and we're 41-152 (3.7 ypc). Our running got stronger later in the game for two reasons:

1. OL depth and conditioning
2. Pittman running with authority, which susequently lit a fire under Ross

I still think Ross looks slow out of the gate. Get him in the open field and he's fast enough. But he looks slow at the point of attack.

Bt the way.....The radio announcers said Pittman got chewed out on the sidelines immedietly after the run in which he ran out of bounds.
I thought I was watching Franco Harris again....LOL

I do like that kid. He's going to be a good back

MililaniBuckeye.....I understand the logic behind your statement, I just don't agree with the "what if he didnt have that run" logic...the fact is he did and the running game was 10 times better than last year, I was at the game and there were several times where Lydell missed the hole but he definetly played like a captain today....

ashland....

pittman carried the ball the play before you spoke of....he dinged his right leg a little on that run....he asked to be taken out...but was left in....

next play he busts it....but he was gimpy....if you notice he didnt play again....

he was simply dinged....

Agreed. The ironic thing is that it was a freshman Ross who did the same thing to a senior Wells in '01. Hopefully history repeats itself and Lydell gets his 1,000.

Overall he did not look much different than in years past unfortunately. Hopefully the added depth at TB and better passing will free Lydell up for a bigger season.

Exactly right. I was thinking to myself, when he was trying to work out the kink in his leg before the big run, there was no way I'd come out of the game unless my leg was about to fall off. Next play he busts a long one. He runs so effortlessly and has such great speed and vision. He looks more like the back he was as a junior before the turf toe injury slowed him a bit his senior year at Buchtel. He's a good one.

I liked what the offense did mixing it up pretty well. The difference between ross and pittman is ross has to shutdown to make a cut, where pittman can make it at full speed. Zwick is ok just needs to step into his throws instead of off his back foot.

There was so many different formations and adjustments made today I felt out of rhythmn my self. I think there was definitely a lot of experimenting going on, which is what needs to happen with a young offense. I'm just happy and surprised that jt went about it that way! Overall, good things are happening!

For Zwick, I can shrug off the INTs. It's the bobbled snaps and fumbles that concern me. TS looked good when he got in, and will be a good backup. I wish JT would trust him a little more and just let him throw sometimes though. The offense and defense were better than I expected. How about that 3-4 and Dustin Fox playing the game of his life? The most important part though was that Lydell is still 100% healthy. If he can stay that way (and Pittman can stay healthy too), our offense will go.
