Who Uses/Used a Chiropractor?

:osu: First of all, I want to clear some misconcetions people may have about chiropractors. As with any doctor, or porfessional, there are good ones and there are bad ones. The best thing to do to find a GOOD chiropractor is to do your research. Talk to people who have gone to the chiropractor and see what they are about and how much they helped that person. I am a chiropractor in South Carolina, but am originally from Ohio, and it hurts my heart to hear someone say that chiropractors are only people who couldn't get into medical school. I chose to become a chiropractor because I had such success with a chiropractor after injurring my back playing basketball as a teenager, when nothing else helped. I have been privaledged enough to help a lot of patients in my two years out of school that no other doctor or physical therapist could help. Yes, sometimes it does take some time, but that is based on how long the problem has been there. I have also had some patients see improvements within a week. It all depends on the severity and the age and health of the patient.

Please, just do us all a favor and become informed on all your choices in healthcare; chiropractor or whomever, before deciding what is and what isn't helpful.

Hope this helps those that haven't had too much negative imfluence on their opinion on chiropractors and also informed some of you who may have a negative view on us. We aren't all bad, and we have as much education ad medical doctors, we just don't have to go through a residency program.

Thanx for listening and have a wonderful day.

I appreciate you chiming in on this and welcome to the board. The chiropractor I was seeing is also the team chiropractor for the Columbus Crew and the Columbus Destroyers. While it may very well make some people feel better, I don't see how chiropractic care can help or cure anything, much less Degenerative Disc Disorder, which I have a very bad case of in my C2-C4 range. Decompression Therapy was no different than the traction I was getting with physical therapy, and the exercises strengthing the neck do nothing for the spines lack of cushion.

I eventually had a High Frequency Radio Neurotomy done to alleviate the crippling pain and headaches. Something months of seeing a Chiropractor did nothing for.

I have been having problems with my back and I went to one on a whim a couple of weeks ago. He did and exam and x-rays and then reviewed those with me as part of a 12 visit plan. I haven't decided to do it at this point. My back has been better since and I am working on my exercise and eating to see if that helps.

I've had some very low back issues for the last couple years so I went for about 10 visits, just over a year ago. While it helped relieve some discomfort and increase mobility a little, it never felt like it was correcting or repairing anything, so I looked into other options. Learned that a lot of physical therapists also do adjustment and manipulation along with massage therapy and the typical exercise treatment. Went to about 15 PT visits, did my home exercises and have had much, much better results. Still deal with some discomfort but I'm back to playing basketball and soccer and don't have any restriction on my lifting/workouts. Everybody is different but I'd recommend PT before chiro based on my experience. And as mentioned, diet and exercise are paramount to any kind of recovery; without improvement on those, most corrective efforts will be temporary.

I went to one monday because the family Dr. prescribed meds for the pain but neglected to fix the problem. Basically your average "take two tylenol and call me in the morning" deal. Well that didnt do anything for my serious back pain. I didn't want to wait until Dr. Family prescribed therapy so I called Dr Chiro.
Dr. chiro said the muscles where my ribs are connected to my spine are bound up from coughing and said he could fix me up. Tuesday I felt progress was being made so I'm going back today.

Chiros have their uses. After golf, walked funny (from overaggressive swing), and right into the chiro's office (member of same CC I play). Snap, crackle, and pop, and I was walking upright again. After three times of this, he recommended that I go to PT for a cure. OK, so did, and PT had me working the opposite muscles (strengthening), that held my spine in place. Voila, haven't needed him since. Hopefully you get one that has your continued health as his goal, instead of his/her pocketbook. Always ask what is the long-term gameplan. No gameplan, exit stage right. "We'll adjust, and then see" is not much of a game plan. Good Luck

I went again Weds and will go again today. I have to confess that the amount of "day after the visit" pain was more on thurs than it was on tues.
At any rate I will talk to Dr. family today to get more of the non pain killing hydrocodone (3 mg) and see what he has to say about therapy. I woke up at 4:30 because of pain.
The above noted muscle strengthening has merit.
I am supposed to drive to Delaware tomorrow and I don't want to inflame my back.

Chiropractors can make your life better. But you have to find the right one for whatever your injury is. They can be all over the place with ability to treat an injury. My wife and I have used them for years. Some are " traditional bone crackers" others may use tens or a plunger like "activator". Some may know how to use acupuncture needles. Beware! Some are just "quacks". YMMV

Plus. My wife found a very firm mattress to be of great help. That fixed 80% of her problems. Also the IcyHot Smart Relief tens unit. That's a great pain reliever. You can even wear that while driving. Don't take pain relievers and drive. You could become "impaired".
