Who Uses/Used a Chiropractor?

I've been going to a chiropractor for a few weeks because of my back (bulging disk in lower back) and my neck (which I think is stress). I am not feeling any better and have lately been feeling worse. Is this normal? I know many people question chiropractors, but I went into it with an open mind hoping he could help me.

Comments from anyone who has any experience with them would be appreciated.

I and my wife have used chiropractic on numerous occasions over the years.
When my wife crushed a disc (L3) in her back he could do nothing for her and she had surgery. She's fine, now.
A bulging disc may or may not be helped by a chiro. If it's bulging badly he probably can't help. If it's not bad than he may provide some relief.
For a lot of back and neck problems a good chiro can make life good again. I ruined my back at work and he made me better.
Bicycling is very helpful for back problems. That's one reason why I bicycle.
Some chiropractors think they can cure every thing. Be skeptical of claims. They can provide relief from headaches.
Getting real progress takes time. Be prepared for some time to go by till you get relief.
Another option is acupuncture! It can be very helpful if done by an expert. Insurance may pick it up, also!
You can help yourself by losing weight if you have excess. And strengthening your core muscles.
Good luck and get better!

There may be another thread on this some where?

Just speaking from personal experience with injuries (chiropractic stuff included), but a lot of times, things do have to get worse for them to get better.

FWIW, in the long run...the chiropractor fixed me quite well. Took a good while, but in the end it was worth the two years invested.

could have been time and youth as much as, if not more than, it was the chiropractor. i'd put my health in the hands of a pt before i would a chiropractor. chiropractors throw around the term "subluxation" like fox news throws around the term "terror at home."

I have gone two 2 different ones for a year now. Some are full of shit money grubbers (the first one I went to.) However, to promote healing, they must first slightly injure the area. That makes it feel worse at first.

Agree 110%. They can be quite helpful, esp. for vertebra out of place, but there's a limit. In my experience, the more "hands on" a chiropractor is, and the less reliant on technology, the better.

Cycling is no good for me. I used to bike, but with the disk in my lower back the angle of cycling puts too much stress on the disk. I now run.

Not to insult your intelligence, but ya might wanna consider swimming. All the cardio, none of the stress points. And you finish refreshed and relaxed.

My parents sent me to a couple when I was in high school for a problem with my knee (thanks mom and dad). They all were worthless. I'd rather see a faith healer than one of these quacks.

Well, don't rule them out completely. I once threw my neck out...couldn't even walk straight. Painful as hell. My mom took me to some guy way the hell out in the country, and we paid him $6.00 to snap it back into place. (This was late 1970s).

That was the best $6.00 ever spent!

But I've had your experience, too. Many visits, lot's of money, no results. It's frustrating.

Went to an Air Force one back in 2000, about a year before I retired. I had sporatic sharp pains in my right hip, right knee, and right ankle...pain killers didn't do shit. When I told him about the pains and told him I got them right after doing high-impact cardio workouts, he knew exactly what the problem was. Ciatic nerve or some shit. He told me to arch my back as far as a could by doing a push-up on the floor while keeping my pelvis on the ground. He said to repeat that for five minutes in the morning and in the evening. A few days later the pains were gone, and never return as long as I do those stretches. I've started running and biking again after the football season layoff and the hip/knee pains are starting to return, so it's time for me to start those stretches again.

In summary, one visit, one great result.
