Who Redshirts in 2008?

OHSportsFan9;1225684; said:
Getting a little closer to kickoff and this is one of my favorite subjects (to look back on).

I'll throw my guess out there.

REDSHIRTS
-Buchanan, K
-Domicone, S
-DiLillo, TE
-Martin, FB
-Johnson, ATH
-Howard, CB
-Williams, DE/LB
-Wells, DE
-Thomas, WR/RB
-Rowell, DT
I'll go with OHSportsFan9 list of redshirts but add Stoneburner. If we don't have injuries we are too stacked for him to see the field.

I'm going to go with the following to see the field.
Pryor
Sabino
Howard- Will be an asset on special teams
Posey
Adams
Brewster
Goebel
Mobley

Shugarts, Sweat, Thomas, and Stoney all have a shot, but I will say they most likely redshirt. I can see Thomas if Saine and Boom don't get it done on kicks or if they need the quick screen. Stoneburner if they want to work on some jump ball tactics. Shugarts if Adams has a pitfall with his recovery and Sweat on special teams... But in the end I think they will redshirt

Play:
- Pryor
- Thomas
- Stoney (if he plays TE)
- Posey
- Adams
- Brewster
- Shugarts
- Mobley
- Sabino
- Sweat
- Howard
Redshirt:
- Buchanon
- Nathan Williams
- Goebel
- DeLillo
- Domicone
- Ohrian Johnson
- Jermil Martin
- Keith Wells

Tough calls this year. I think Sweat and Howard play exclusively on kick coverage/special teams. Sabino gets some time at LB in mop up duty and on special teams. Pryor is obvious. Thomas is too electric to sideline and I would like to think he gets a few touches on offense and maybe cracks the lineup returning kicks. Posey is just too good to keep off the field and plays at WR and maybe special teams. Stoney plays if it's at TE and/or we need a size mismatch. The Block O gets PT, Adams and Brew getting significant reps imo. Shugarts will get some duty too and this depends on how healthy our OL stays. Mobley is my surprise guy and while I personally believe Garrett Goebel to be our best DL in the freshman class, I have to pick an upset and Mobley looks physically ready to go somewhere on the DL. Buchanon is an easy choice imo, as is DeLillo. Domicone could surprise and play some on special teams, as could Ohrian Johnson, but just my hunch that they RS. Jermil Martin could get some time if Terry doesn't stay healthy or if we are bent on having 2 FB's, but I see the RS. My guess is that Keith Wells redshirts to get more physically prepared (though he is getting bigger) but he could surprise and he is a deadly pass rusher. It seems we'll be set but if Gibson gets hurt, I see Keith as most likely to get a chance. Nathan Williams is also a strong candidate for early PT with his strength and athleticism, but only so many can play. All in all, this class is just so talented that it is tough to project who earns the early PT. The only guys I see as locks to play are Pryor, Adams, Brewster, Shugarts, Posey, and Sabino.

Redshirting is often a freshman's only course

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Standing on the Ohio Stadium turf last week, Jacob Stoneburner was surrounded: All-Americans to the left, Heisman Trophy candidates to the right. Scanning his new teammates, the freshman receiver from Dublin then proved that though he is young, he's not dumb.
"For any freshman to play this year would be truly a remarkable accomplishment," he said, "because there's so much talent out here."
In terms of making an immediate impact, Stoneburner and the other 18 incoming freshmen (another, Shawntel Rowell, hopes to enroll for winter quarter) came to Ohio State at a bad time.
The Buckeyes have 26 seniors and return 18 starters. With very few holes to fill, the freshmen find themselves not competing for starting jobs but hoping to find a niche and avoid redshirting.
Quarterback Terrelle Pryor is in a separate category. The nation's top-ranked recruit obviously will see the field, it's just a question of when and how much.

Ready, or redshirt?

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

http://www.dispatch.com/live/content/buckeyextra/osufbquiz.html

Historically, about half of an incoming freshman class redshirts. Here is a look at the three freshmen most likely to play, and the three most likely to be redshirted (quarterback Terrelle Pryor is not included, as he's a rock-solid guarantee to play): READY

OL Mike Adams: He's coming off shoulder surgery in the spring. But he says he'll be fully healthy by the start of the season. He's a blue-chipper, expected to be the left tackle of the future. And with OSU losing three starters off the line after this season, they need Adams to at least get a little playing time.
WR DeVier Posey: Word is this guy is the real deal. And though the starting spots are filled, Posey could easily be a solid No. 4 on the depth chart, and possibly threaten the No. 3 spot.
LB Etienne Sabino: Looked like a natural playmaker in the spring. Likely won't see much time on defense, but he could play a lot on special teams, at least.

Here's what JT said today about which freshmen will likely play in Game 1.

Will play: Pryor, Adams, Brewster, Shugarts, Thomas, Sabino, Wells, (edit - added Posey)

50-50: Domicone, Sweat, Williams

official.site

REPORTER: I know you said that you're still talking about this, but are there any freshmen you're certain are going to play in this game?

COACH TRESSEL: Certain?

REPORTER: You named Keith Wells a minute ago.

REPORTER: Anybody you feel is better than 50% chance?

COACH TRESSEL: Better than 50% chance? I'd say better than 50% chance that Pryor will play, Lamaar, Brewster would play, Adams would play, Shugarts will play, defensively Sabino, Wells, I think it's still 50/50 with Nathan Williams, although I think it's starting to push towards the 50 to play. I think he's going to be really good. Sweat, I think it's still 50/50. Who am I missing here? Zach Domicone? Probably 50/50, but I think he's going to be good. He's got a presence about him.

REPORTER: How about Martin at fullback?

COACH TRESSEL: Probably not. Fullback-wise we're probably going to be with Brandon Smith, Ryan Lukens and Curtis at this moment, but we're happy with Jermil Martin and Georgiades, we think one day they're going to be good fullbacks but just for this moment, going into this game with the current health of our team, hopefully we stay healthy through the next three days. All of these percentages, obviously there's an asterisk based upon the next three practices.

REPORTER: Travis Howard, is he another one that might play?
COACH TRESSEL: Travis has been out with a little bit of an injury, so, no, he probably hasn't had enough work.

edit - added this part

REPORTER: In that regard, this is no slam on Joe Bauserman, but are you eager to see Terrelle basically in the flesh playing for your team? I mean, do you have a sense of anticipation?
COACH TRESSEL: Oh, absolutely. But I don't want to limit it to Terrelle. I'm anxious to see Mike Brewster. I'm anxious to see Etienne Sabino, Posey, all those young guys, Keith Wells, because they've come in and done a nice job, we've never seen them in a game. How many of the freshmen are going to play and how many are going to redshirt, I think we're still in those discussion phases

Nice. What's shocking to me is no DeVier Posey. Nice to see Domicone getting some recognition, as well as Nathan Williams. I can't wait for Saturday. :osu:

I watched Buckeye Blitz on ONN last night and they showed the Tressel press conference and he said Posey would see playing time. I don't know why it wasn't mentioned in this transcript.

Thanks, I found it nearly impossible to believe Posey wouldn't play.

It was in another section - I've added it to the quoted area above.
