Who Redshirts in 2008?

I am pretty good at this - last year my list included Heyward as a lock.

This may be the toughest year ever. One of our best classes merging with one of our deepest teams.

IMO most likely are Johnson, Martin, DiLilo, Domicone, Howard and Buchanan.

Also Rowell to get his weight back up and Williams to prove he can do it in the classroom. Wells will have to gain some weight as well. I see Goebel and Mobley as the only DL to get PT.

OL is a tough call. All three are good enough to play - but OL are the most common to RS. Recovery from injuries is likely to determine what happens here.

Pryor and Sabino see the field.

I don;t know how you keep Sweat off the field - but it would have to be special teams.

Toughest call is among Posey, Stoney and Thomas. My call is Posey and Thomas play and Stoney sits because there simply is no room.

With Robiskie departing, I think you'll see PT for Stoneburner if only to get his feet wet for heavier duty next fall, if not this year.

If Small, Saine & MoW step it up in the return and screen department, there's a better chance they wait to deploy Flash.

Pryor, Goebel, Posey, Mobley, Sabino, Thomas, Adams, Brewster, Shugarts will be the only players not to be redshirted.

K. Wells while I lovvvvvve his upside, is one of the smallest D-linemen i've ever seen at a major program.

Sweats, Stoneburner, and Martin are the three that I didn't pick that I think have a chance. Thomas is the one who I picked to not redshirt that i'm the least confident on.

They're just are not enough minutes in the season to get all of the guys who deserve some reps playing time. The 2009 season will really be a 180 with so many new faces taking over as starters.

2009 and onward I think we will be seeing a fundamental change to the way we play ball at Ohio State offensively. Just look at the guys we'll most likely have in the backfield...

Alomst certain: Buchannan, don't need him this year; Delillo, ditto; Domicone, conditioning, concentrate on DB. Probable, but may play ST: Howard; Johnson; Wells; Williams. 50/50: Martin; Rowell; Sweat; Thomas. Can't keep 'em off the field: Adams; Brewster; Goebel; Mobley; Posey; Pryor; Sabino; Shugarts; Stoneburner.

Ohio State has an interesting conundrum as far as redshirting. Most of the players we sign have enough talent that they could leave after 3 years. However, that does not mean they'll all go. This years senior class certainly threw a wrench in the works, creating a logjam at many positions. Luckily, this has not seemed to affect recruiting, as top prospects seem to have no problem waiting their turn. Redshirting players who need a year of conditioning or seasoning is still the best option. Redshirting due to depth has pros and cons. Is it better to add a year of eligibility, or to get players real game time on ST and in mop up situations? I'm sure the coaches will evaluate each player and position individually. Either way, we're freaking stacked!

Getting a little closer to kickoff and this is one of my favorite subjects (to look back on).

I'll throw my guess out there.

REDSHIRTS
-Buchanan, K
-Domicone, S
-DiLillo, TE
-Martin, FB
-Johnson, ATH
-Howard, CB
-Williams, DE/LB
-Wells, DE
-Thomas, WR/RB
-Rowell, DT (not sure this even counts)

Almost certain to PLAY
-Stoneburner, WR
-Sweat, LB
-Adams, OL (plays if healthy)
-Mobley, DE

PLAYs in 2008
-Pryor, QB
-Posey, WR
-Sabino, LB
-Brewster, OL
-Shugarts, OL
-Goebel, DT

Injuries could throw any of these predictions off (especially along the DLine). Looks like I have 10 playing and 10 redshirting. No freshmen start, but their playing time comes during blow-outs and special teams. A select few (Pryor, Brewster, Shurgarts) get PT during a significant part of the game, or at least as significant as some of our games will be (i.e. some of the Olinemen may come in when it's 21-3 against Ohio early in the 2nd quarter).

I think you can take Howard off of it, too. With all the suspensions among the defensive backs, I don't see how he doesn't get playing time. I wouldn't be surprised to see him in a Dime package or two and not just limited to special teams.

I'll take a shot at it. The tough calls are the DL guys and Stoney.

-Rowell, DT (he's a grayshrt now, so it doesn't count)

REDSHIRTS
Buchanan, K
Domicone, S
DiLillo, TE
Howard, CB
Johnson, ATH
Mobley, DE
Williams, DE
Wells, DE

Probable redshirt - nobody (c'mon, make the call either way)

Probably will play - nobody (c'mon, make the call either way)

PLAYs in 2008
Adams, OL (left tackle)
Brewster, OL (center)
Goebel, DT
Martin, FB
Posey, WR
Pryor, QB
Sabino, LB
Shugarts, OL (right tackle)
Stoneburner, WR
Sweat, LB (special teams only)
Thomas, WR//RB/KR

You sure about that?

Let me take a stab at this...

Those who play:
Pryor
Posey: will get pt to bring more speed element into the receiving corp.
Thomas: will get pt to bring more speed and create mismatches out of the backfield.
Sabino: have Laurinatis coach him up for next season.
Howard: start from sp. teams and go from there.
Johnson: start from sp. teams and go from there.
Martin: need to prep him for next season.
Adams: need to prep him for next season.
Brewster: need to prep him for next season.

The rest redshirt.
