Who redshirts in 2007?

Always one of my favorite topics.

Blankenship, Heyward, Thomas and Rolle seem like locks to R/S.

Saine will play. Sounds like Sanzenbacher and Washington will make some noise, but if Saine plays receiver and nobody is injured competition could be tough. I think one does and one doesn't. Herron is a possible - very likely if either Wells gets dinged.

There are a lot of talented DBs coming in, but I think we have something like 41 experienced DBs already on the roster. Tough to keep Clifford and maybe one or two others off the field - even if it is just special teams.

Thoughts?

With all the freshmen defensive backs, I have to think half will redshirt just to create some separation.

I think Pentello and Scott redshirt, and possibly Evege. As for the rest, Blankenship, Herron, Sanzenbacher, Thomas, Hines, and Rolle seem like good bets.

With the lack of depth at DT, I figure Heyward will see some playing time. It'll be hard to keep Saine and Clifford off the field, and I think Oliver and Torrence will contribute on special teams.

Here's my take.

Probable redshirts:
Blankenship
Evege
Hines
Pentello
Rolle
Scott
Thomas

Almost certain to play in 2007:
Clifford
Oliver
Saine

Could go either way:
Herron (probably only plays if a Wells is injured, as already stated)
Heyward (I'm guessing he plays)
Sanzenbacher (I'm guessing he plays)
Torrence (I'm guessing he redshirts)
Washington (I'm guessing he redshirts)

Redshirt: Herron, Sanzenbacher, Blankenship, Thomas, Heyward, Hines, Rolle, and Pentello
Play: Saine, Clifford, Scott, Torrence, Evege, Oliver, and Washington

-This would coincide with JT saying the normal plan is to RS half of them. I listed the non RS's in order of likelihood that they play. I've heard Evege is likely to get some serious special teams time this year, possibly at gunner on punt coverage and be on kick coverage. Saine is too talented to keep off the field, ditto with Gene and I think he plays nickel, Scott is an extremely fast and physical player that I see playing special teams rigth away, Torrence and Oliver I see playign special teams as well, and Washington could possibly log some time in at WR but he is the biggest reach imo with the depth we have there.

This thread would be more meaningful if you mentioned why you think these guys get redshirted or why one plays and the other not.

Sanzenbacher - very skilled, great hands and speed, has demonstrated clutch play and would be a great possession receiver, has other skills on defense, special teams (undiscovered). Could be a backup on kickoffs or punts.

Washington - good size and speed, may need to work on route running, his HS rating was higher but his stats coming in were so so, have not seen much film on him but have seen Sanzenbacher play.

Very close call but Sanz plays IMO and Washington RS based on overall skills. I wish they could all make the cut.

I would need to see more of the other guys to judge, but JT and is staff will make that call. Summer drills will prove them out.
