Who redshirts in 2007?

It's not something you declare. Whoever doesn't play by the end of the season is a redshirt by default.

I know that, but don't they declare (the coaches pretty much tell the players they are going to be redshirted) some players as redshirted before the season starts?

I'm sure there is some sort of awareness by the players before the season starts that the coaches have no intentions of using them this season. But a better guage of that would be looking at who plays and who does not play during the YSU game, because I imagine anyone who they are not planning on redshirting this season will see the field that day.

It used to be that they didn't pull a RS unless the kid could contribute and was needed. Now it also comes off if the kid isn't likely to stay five years in any case.

Also, whatever the other indications, things can change based on injuries.

While it is not uncommon to see a name appear in the participation report for the first time after the 5th game or so, it is uncommon to see such a name when it isn't in error.

Possible Redshirts: OSU's freshman class will make it's debut in Ohio Stadium on Saturday, and many of them are expected to see the field. Another rather large group are still "on the bubble" as to whether they will play or redshirt this season.

"There's five or six of those guys that we don't know for sure if we're going to put them in the game," said Tressel.

"Nate Oliver, Rocco Pentello, Donnie Evenge.

"Evan Blankenship won't play because he came in with a little bit of an injury and now he's just starting to get back in it, so he won't.

"Solomon (Thomas) probably wouldn't get in the game. Eugene Clifford will, Brandon Saine will, Dane Sanzenbacher will, Taurian Washington will, Devon Torrence will.

"Danny Herron is probably a bubble.
"Cameron Hayward will.

"James Scott is a little bit on the bubble but it wouldn't shock me if the coaches thought he might go in."
Hope you got all that.

Cont'd ...

Input about redshirts
The Buckeyes currently are redshirting six of their 15 freshmen, and Tressel said players sometimes have input over whether to sit out a full year and save it for later.
"I've had guys say, 'Coach, I can't survive in life without playing ? even if I only get to run down on kickoff every three games.' And a guy will take his redshirt off and go do that. And then he comes in my office three years later and says, 'I can't believe you let me do that.' Well, I don't want you to take your life.
"So, we have a lot of discussions with them."

Class of 2007 who have played so far:

  1. Clifford
  2. Heyward
  3. Hines
  4. Rolle
  5. Saine
  6. Sanzenbacher
  7. Scott
  8. Torrence
  9. Washington
Those who have yet to play:

  1. Blankenship
  2. Evege
  3. Herron
  4. Oliver
  5. Pentello
  6. Thomas
Looks like that number will stay at six. We know for a fact that come hell or high water Herron won't see the field this year after JT had three walk-ons get carries while Boom stayed on the sidelines...
