Yes - when I was looking up his stats, I learned that he was 3rd in 1969, and 5th in 1970, to confirm your memory.IIRC he was third for the Heisman in ‘69 and 5th in ‘70

Also, to be fair to Kern, it should be pointed out that a big part of the option is reading the defense and knowing what to do with the ball. None of these stats show what was done on the plays when he pitched the ball or handed the ball off, based on the defense.
