What if Haskins had been blessed with the ridiculous receiving corps that the Buckeyes have had since shortly after he left?

Sure, Hill and Mack were good, but what Hartline did for WR recruiting is a big reason why all 4 of the OSU pass efficiency seasons that exceeded Dwayne’s have been posted in the 5 years since he left

He had Terry McLaurin too who has proven to be a stud in the NFL. Haskins would've benefitted more from a better run game. 2018 was a grind on the ground

Troy Smith won the Heisman as a QB in the Tressel offense. He was so good.

I do think the recent talent at QB at OSU has been particularly great though.

I think I have to go with CJ. What he's done in the NFL is extremely rare, which makes me appreciate his time here even more. CJ could toss the ball better than anyone I've seen here, personally.

(I have a signed and framed Troy Smith jersey, I do feel guilt right now)

Imo, Haskins had the best room in the last 6 years.

While I love Hartline, he doesn’t rotate for shit.

Give me players like Mack, Hill, Victor, Campbell, Dixon and McLaurin over just three players who play all year.

Sorry, but you lost me on this one.
Give me 3-4 first round picks over 6 decent (but not great) WRs all day long.
And yes, I know McLaurin has been great in the NFL, but he was just OK in college.

Yeah we’ll have to agree to disagree.

Thing is I think our rooms are deeper now too but we just don’t rotate at all.

want a real hot take? Give me Zach Smiths rooms and Hartlines recruiting. Smiths rooms had a grittiness to them that I think we are missing. The want to block, the want to be physical after the catch etc.

Is Hart better? Yeah… but I think we underestimate Zach Smiths tenure. Just think what Hartline took over btw. Hartline inherited Olave and Wilson… absolutely gets credit for JSN and Marv but still

I give Smith near 0 credit for any of this. Olave was found and recruited by Day. Wilson was recruited by Day and Urban.
Urban set the tone and expectations for receiver play/blocking.
Smith talks a lot of smack, but there are no teams interested in him coaching.

We don’t know any of this…and no I assume Smith isn’t coaching because of the allegations against him. That said he seems to be doing better now that he’s out of his marriage. Maybe it wasn’t him? Who knows.


Any rate, I think many downplay the roll Smith had with that room. Can say what you want but Hartline took over a stacked room with multiple team captains (three!!!) and a crazy culture. He literally created the moniker of zone 6.

Something I just learned: Rex Kern played defensive back in the NFL. I never knew that.

I looked these up in an attempt to compare his stats to some of the others on the voting list. However, like someone else said, that was a different time. Kern had Woody as his head coach, and I'm not sure that his pass game ideas were all that cutting-edge. Rex Kern threw the ball about 13.5 times per game in his 3 years.
I'm sure his completion percentage and TD:Int rate would have increased in an offense like today's, but I don't buy that it would have increased to match Justin Fields's level.

I think the era can explain the difference in stats a little bit. But Fields had more than three times as many touchdowns in about 72% more pass attempts.

There is more discussion about Rex Kern than I expected, but I’m here for it.

To me, the biggest danger in comparing Kern to others is that i was a kid when I saw Rex Kern play. No one can compete with that.

But what did the adults (at the time) think of Rex Kern

IIRC he was third for the Heisman in ‘69 and 5th in ‘70

And again, IIRC there were some huge names in the top 10 in Heisman voting both years. Archie Manning, Joe Theisman, and Jim Plunket are some names that come to mind. I believe the 1970 qb class was particularly good

Kern was the only “running qb” in the top 5 of the Heisman voting both years. I’m pretty sure he had a fraction of the pass attempts of anyone else that highly regarded both years

Long story short he was the top option quarterback in the nation by a wide margin
