The Dalai Lama has urged religious people to work for the good of humanity and care for the environment in an address at Westminster Abbey.
The Tibetan spiritual leader said it was important that religious faith was not confined to holy books or buildings but that it had an impact upon lives.
"I think millions of people have a genuine sense of spirituality, we must work together to serve humanity," he said.
"We now also have responsibility for the care of the planet.
"I am quite sure that religions still have an important role to make a better humanity," he added.

How exactly does one serve humanity and the environment and how do you know you're doing it correctly? And if your top priority is to serve humanity and the environment but there is a mandate that is in direct opposition to serving your family/wife, do you still serve humanity and the environment or do you sometimes make exceptions?

I have been through the thread a couple of times and noodling over this idea of who do I serve. I have done a lot of reading on Servant Leadership and even worked for a company that "professed" this as one of its core philosophy and reasons to work there.

To say that I am in service to someone, organization, or deity seems sort of odd to me. I believe that the works of my life are of service in many ways to my family and the organizations that I belong to. Through those works, then leadership, mentoring, and value are provided.

Why do you find it odd to say you are servicing your family and the org s you belong too? Sounds natural to me.

I feel it is inherent in our works that we are serving our families, organizations, etc. So, to respond to the question such as it is would to me say that I have decided that I only serve certain defined entities.

I serve myself.

And I believe that everyone who is not suffering from an injured or diseased brain does the same.

This.

Life is an emergent situation that must be dealt with at all times. You serve yourself first. I would argue that it's not even an option. It is merely, fact. Service to our selves makes it possible to serve other people , organizations, causes, ideals, and all the like. It's the burning building scenario, if you don't save yourself first, you can't possibly save anyone else.
