Last season, we ran a poll on the greatest Buckeyes ever. The results are set forth below:

Chris Spielman: 133 votes
Tom Cousineau: 91 votes
Andy Katzenmoyer: 90 votes
Randy Gradishar: 83 votes
Pepper Johnson: 78 votes
Matt Wilhelm: 59 votes
Marcus Marek: 44 votes
Na'il Diggs: 18 votes
Steve Tovar: 14 votes
Ike Kelly: 5 votes
Other: 5 votes

Each voter was allowed to select 5 linebackers.

In light of all the discussion concerning AJ Hawk and Bobby Carpernter, I thought that it would be interesting to re-visit the poll, with Hawk and Carp added to the list.

For this poll, please make FIVE selections.

The 5th choice was very difficult.

Spielman, Hawk, Gradishar, Cousineau, and Marek.

I went with Marek over Katzenmoyer based on sheer numbers of tackles.

The first four were relatively easy - Spielman (clear #1), followed by Hawk and Gradishar (pretty even) and then Cousineau; I also went with Pepper for #5; Hawk replaced Katzenmoyer on my top 5 list. It's hard to leave Marek off the list. BTW, the bottom of the list guys - Tovar, Wilhelm, and Diggs - would make a pretty good LB corps, and Ike Kelly was a two-time All-American.

BTW, all of the guys on the list were All-Americans, except for Carp (who might be this year):

Kelly, 1964-65
Gradishar, 1972-3
Cousineau, 1977-8
Marek, 1982
Johnson, 1985
Spielman, 1986-87
Tovar, 1991-2
Katzenmoyer, 1997
Diggs, 1999
Wilhelm, 2002
Hawk, 2004 (and presumably 2005)

I'm right there with BB73,
Gradishar
Cousineau
Marek
Spielman
Hawk

And this was simply done chronologically.

Its sad to see Katzenmoyer ahead of Gradishar, that just shows the youth of the board here, as does the fact that Marek is getting buried. But hey, the young fans of today are the tired old'dick fans like me of tomorrow.

I went by shear numbers and bumped Tovar with Hawk. Simply because I don't remember Tovar like I do Spielman, Marek, Pepper and Cousineau. Katz didn't stay and will always get dinged for that. If AJ equals last years production he climbs to fourth all time. No way he catches the top three.

Thanks, dubs. I agree with your comments about the LB's and the board members, but I'm not ready to describe my own member as a "tired old'dick".
