I'm sure there are guys on this site that have damn good wheels... and know there are times they screwed up... but their wheels covered their ass and they were able to cover up their screw up

but on the flipside.. there are guys on this site that felt they had very good skills but that damn kid with shitty skills just ran by your butt and wasn't anything you could do about it

BTW.. only reason I started this thread was because of Larry Grant thread.. I was curious to see what folks felt... good stuff... both ways... where's 21?

fastest kid (WR & DB) I ever knew about at Akron U... had average skills... and overall he was average on his best day... so guys voting skills... are validated... but you can't tackle what you can't catch too...

You can't teach instincts or vision, which are part of the skills "package". I think the poll question should have been more specific and said "natural" speed or skills.

Exactly! It also depends on what position the individual is slotted to play. Is it necessary for a nose tackle to have great speed. No, his job is to clog up the middle. It would be nice for the guy to have get speed and get after the QB, but don't confuse speed with quickness.

Secondly, it depends on what sport you are discussing. Speed is not as necessary (in most positions) in Baseball as it is in Football. Skill sets for a catcher is far more important that speed in this equation.

As of this post, the poll is split as close to 50/50 as it can be with 43 votes (22/21). To me, this shows there's no really clear-cut "right" answer. Well, the best answer isn't a poll option (outsatnding speed and skills)...Ginn is working real hard on getting there.

Oh my... do I ever disagree.. but for a different thread at a different time... I'll bend for catcher, pitcher and 1st defensively -- only...

I must admit... I am surprised... I didn't think it'd be close... interesting...

That is why I said most positions......3rd Base does not need to have speed. Don't confuse speed for quickness. You must be quick to play that position and most positions in the infield. Short bursts of speed (I call quickness) 1-20 yards in length are preferable to a 100 yard speed demon. Outfield is another matter entirely.......

If I got a kid with killer wheels on first... I'm gonna screw up everything you got going on with all your super skills at all the defensive positions... I'm even going to mess up your pitcher who will NOT throw a breaking ball and whose fastball misses the zone cuz he has to rush it...

sorry... threadjacking my own thread... back to football...

Remember your kid has to get on to first. He can't hit what he can't see. The A's at one time tried an experiment with U.L. Washington (great speed, average skills) should have been a great base stealer to your point. But he never got on base, and had to be used as a pinch runner. He could never get a great jump on the pitch because there is more to stealing a base than speed. A good battery combination can most times hold the runner close and to some extent negate his speed advantage. You have a point but you must be able to move the runner along and great pitching and defense wins more often than not.......

Now back to football.....

Can I answer it depends?
Of course speed is critical. What you see today is fast WRs, DBs, RB's, QB's and LB's. On the line you need quickness, not nesessarily speed, and technique.

At the upper levels everyone has speed capability. We all know there are blazing recievers that can't catch and there are slightly slower guys that run precise routes and never miss anything thrown their way.

If you are fat and slow you will need a perfect scheme to execute against a faster team. Unless the weather neutralizes their speed. Ever play in an ice or snow storm? How about the mud in a downpour?

As someone who's coach once joked they would use a sundial to time my 40 speed was never my asset. Quickness, aggressiveness and intelligence? were my critical success factors. Spelling and puncutuation do not count.
