To which generation do you belong (i.e. when were you born)?

Don't Immanentize the Eschaton
Yesterday, I was talking with a friend about the characteristics of the different generations that are alive today and it made me wonder what everyone else thought. We concluded that the following strengths and weaknesses could be assigned as followed (dates are when they were born):

Greatest Generation (1900-1928)
Strength: Survived Depression, Won WWII, rebuilt America
Weakness: After going through hardships, decided everyone owed them

Silent Generation (1929-1945)
Strength: Simply did whatever job was asked of them
Weakness: Neglected bigger questions of morality, equality, and liberty

Baby-Boom Generation (1946-1964)
Strength: Sought to save the world and help the oppressed
Weakness: Narcissistic and hero worshipers of themselves

Generation X (1965-1980)
Strength: Independent, self-reliant, don't trust authority
Weakness: Materialistic, cynical, don't trust authority

Millennial Generation (1981-2001)
Strength: Community minded, want to help others at the local level
Weakness: Believe they are entitled to anything they want

Of course there are exceptions to every rule and the dates can be argued, but what does everyone think? Any other generalizations you can think of for these generations? Do you think you are an oddity to your own generation or are you a good fit?
 
I was born in 1964, which puts me right on the edge of the boomer generation. But I never got along with people my own age. All my friends are generation X. I once heard a commentator disputing the date range for the baby boomers. He said "If you don't remember the Kennedy assassination, then you're not really a boomer." I tend to agree. I'm generation X all the way.

I favor the use of Vietnam as the divider between the Boomers and the Xers, with 1965 the year we instituted the draft as the date to start counting Xers. I have seen the Kennedy assassination as a divider for the two generations as well. However, for someone to say you must remember the assassination (i.e. at least 6 years old or maybe more) that places the end of the Boomers at 1957 if not earlier, which seems way too early for me.

However, since you are right in the disputed area, it is no surprise you relate more to us Xers. Just like my youngest sister who was born in 1981 is a definite Xer and my brother-in-law who was born in 1980 could be the poster boy for the Millennials

I was born in 82 as well, I would say that those born in 80,81, and 82 are in a state of limbo, we do clearly remember the grunge 90's however we were probably a little young to truely understand reality bites. We know plenty of people that feel entitled but also feel older than the "it takes a village" crowd....and by "we" i mean me and i am just assuming that i am not alone

Born in 71, but I think the Millenial fits me better. I give to local charites and volunteer at the local level. I am first and foremost interested in the betterment of Hilliard and its school system. I coach kids sports.

I don't however feel like I'm entitled to anything as the description suggests. I was raised to work my ass off for the things I want and the things I believe in. That's why I thumbed my nose to college ball and joined the Marines.

I'm idealistic in my views. I'm stubborn but open to all views within reason.

I'm not right or left to any extreme.

I am hanging with the Xers, but I would definitely define that "independence" more as "stubborness". I was born in 68 and relate more to the Grunge / hip hop than some of this freaky "empathy" stuff that is going on now (although most of my angst has passed). Oh, and fuck the village, two parents is all you need.

another 82' here. I agree with both of the last two 82's so maybe that year is in the wrong spot or something, I am almost X'er all they way other than the matierialistic part. Maybe thats just cuz I have lived with a new computer and playstations and horses, and ive also done the food stamps helping my dad with his 3rd job thing.

gen x and it seems dead on to me. i actually made a comment yesterday to a friend about how materialistic people my age are.

you should add to the millenium generation "don't understand the conscept of to gain you must sacrifice". though it is essentially in the same spirit of "Believe they are entitled to anything they want". good list i think.
