Actually, if the test was valid this would not be the case. IQ tests are supposed to be normalized so that the mean score always equals 100. In other words, if the population taking the test was exceptionally bright, then all scores would be adjusted so that the mean would remain 100.

Of course in reality this test is not valid. Most IQ tests have a standard deviation of 15. Therefore, if you score above a 145 you have to be in the top .13% of the population taking the test. If you have a score above 160, you would be in the top .003% of the population. The chance that everyone at a particular web site that is only united by their love for a college and its football team makes it essentially impossible for everyone to be scoring as high as they are....either that or a lot of mentally retarded people from other sites are also taking the test and skewing the results.

Translation - BGrad scored below 100! :wink2:

I can live with this, the high end of highly intelligent...clearly they count off for spelling skills

Two other thoughts for those surprised by the high level of scores being reported (the possibility of inaccurate reporting has already been mentioned).

One - perhaps those that took the test and didn't get a high score are more likely to not post their results.

Two - perhaps the website posted a test that returns higher than normal scores in order to increase chatter, and thus traffic to their site.

But I don't know why I'm bothering to say these things. Everybody on this site is smart enough to figure these things out for themselves.

There is absolutely no question in my mind that this test returns MUCH higher than would be indicated by a standard IQ test. That bar chart on the top makes me chuckle - not that there aren't some pretty smart people here, but you wouldnt find a distribution that high polling Nobel Prize winners. A much better (and more widely accepted) indicator of IQ here would be some standardized test scores - SAT (before 1994, now the test is a joke), GMAT, LSAT, and the MAT. I believe the MAT has the highest correlation with IQ of the ones I mentioned. It is unfortunatate that this test isnt used more - it takes less than two hours and is a great indicator of general intelluctual ability. Then again, in the current political climate, perhaps that is exactly why it is not used more.......

Of course the primary problem with all IQ and standardized tests is that they assume a normal bell-shaped distribution exists in the population, which has never actually been proven. Then again, IQ testing came out of the eugenics movement at the beginning of the twentieth century as part of the effort to prove that certain races were superior to others; so why should we be surprised by the lack of supporting evidence for its assumptions.

There are actually some pretty decent IQ batteries, but that's just it, they're batteries testing a relatively wide range of measurables.

Both Vince and I were subjected to a few as kids, but as an adult, I was first given one at Parris Island after a few other rounds of tests. Basically if you scored at a certain level for test A, then they move you to B and C, and then on to either D, E or F from there, and so on. It's how I ended up linguistic cryptology, because of the DLAB. The IQ test they used was the WAIS-R, which is actually the same used by Mensa, although they supplement it with a few other elements.

The point here is that if you're interested, you can contact your local Mensa chapter, and actually arrange a full-blown test, generally for free, or an exceptionally small fee.

Just understand (as it seems like all of you already do) that IQ isn't particularly meaningful. It's more a novelty point of discussion and consideration, like a Myers-Briggs. Which isn't to say that they can't and don't say something about us, just that (as the Lecter quote above suggests) they're each far to blunt to really get down to the important details. Last I knew, the guy in the United States with the highest measured IQ worked as a bouncer for some nightclub. Not because he had to, obviously, but because I think you sort of cross a point where IQ has come at the expense of other qualities that make one well rounded.

Mensa is sort of the high IQ society for the masses. According to some of these numbers, people here would qualify for really egotistical groups like the Prometheus Society and above. But while it (Mensa) is a bit of a joke, and not much more than resume fodder, there are some really exceptional SIGs, including a number related to college football.
