What's Wrong & How to Fix It (Merged)

I just do not understand how we are still not executing. We have had in essence the same starting lineup on offense for over a year now. Are we not teaching them properly?

I will not accept the lack of talent issue. I can guarantee coaches from Northwestern, Louisville, MSU etc would gladly take half the guys on our offense in a heartbeat.

You don't think the scheme has changed from last year? I disagree.

From which point last year? Yes, I do think it's changed. It's somewhere between Zwick's starts and the scUM game. But I don't think the philosophy has. And I don't think the scheme best suits the talent on the field, and I don't think the coach(es) adequately prepare for potential mistakes and the intangibles.

So which scheme would you prefer? Everyone is clamoring for more offense but nobody is offering any solutions.

Grad... Are you saying that you think the offense is fine the way it is? I'd be interested to hear what you think should be changed. I'm not trying to throw you under the bus here, just asking a question since you are obviously more knowledgeable than most on the board when it comes to this.

If you have already posted a soultion then disregard... I haven't read the whole thread.

Here is a prime example. Troy Smith is a great scrambler. However, many feel that they can tell when he's gonna run a draw, b/c he holds the ball higher. Either way, while there may be an extra blocker in pittman, Smith isn't the best at following his blockers. He's great at eluding defenders in space (on broken passing plays0, but more than a few times he didn't gain as many yards vs. Texas b/c he outran his blocking. Pittman on the other hand, did a superb job of following his blocking, and also bouncing it outside.

Therefore, that tells me that a QB draw was becoming fairly predictable, doesn't require you to commit to the run as quickly (b/c he has to change directions and go forward, vs. Pittman starting the run at 75% speed), and you don't necessarily have to shed your blocks as much to tackle Troy.

I think if you go back and look at the game film, Pittman was executing quite well and Troy was only alright. Actually, Troy was executing fairly well as a QB and only OK on the QB draw by the end of the game, IMO.

To me, that's a lack of execution, but a misuse of talent. Pittman was a better choice in the 2nd half when you compare their success running the ball. Smith's talents that day were better used throwing quick hitter passes, which he was doing quite well. Instead, we were calling predictable QB draws which are slow developing.

IMO that's a coaching problem, even tho Smith is the one not executing on the draws. It also is a sign of not adjusting, b/c I think the QB draw was working in the first half, but they clamped down on it in the second. Yet our playcalling stayed fairly similar.

Zwick had a great scamper down the left sideline for 10 yards, that may have been a designed QB draw. Either way, it worked b/c they were on their heels defending the pass.

Did you not read my earlier post?

I'm a big fan of bringing in an offensive coordinator and letting him run his ship how he likes. I'm not an expert to the point where I will call out formations and plays, and don't claim to be. But JT DOES claim to be that, and he hasn't gotten the job done for five years now. I think he is one hell of a coach, and his accomplishments speak for themselves. But the fact remains the tOSU should not have been in a position to lose against Texas, and Penn State just added icing to that cake.

Solution 1:
When 3+ on zone are locking up wr's, Pittman, Hamby. et al, execute short post-outs.

Solution 2:
Return to the Big Back of last year ( God Bless B. Joe!) D. Johnson off tackle w/ a Sims lead early on and Pittman option just for s%^ts & grins.

Solution 3:
If the line collapses, scramble strong; find/make an opportunity; or run Troy!
Also, watch the game films upcoming & if you cannot recog. certain tendancies or D schemes; ASK SOMEONE!!
Just some basics here; thanks, I feel much better now.....

But to me, your scheme should focus on the team's strengths, the team shouldn't have to adapt to the scheme.

While I agree... I tend to have a problem figuring out what said scheme is...

Seems like we're a spread base... yet against Iowa... (and granted they had a kid smaller than me on D-Line)... we loaded up in the I and kicked their asses...

Against Penn State (and even Miami and Texas) it was like Tress had gone bipolar...

So back to, lets make it easier on Troy... yeah... let's make it easier on everyone, and find a basline identity.

Now... It may sound like I prefer to base things on Power Running- and that's true... AND... for those of you who prefer to view Troy as a Mike Vick type palyer... when he was successful at Va. Tech... they ran the ball well... Atlanta... they run the ball well.... (And they both did/do it with a number of backs... so its not just the Tailback). And... guess what... if you'd like to see Justin... he's certainly very qualified to hand the ball off...

So... scheme? Yeah... Execution... Yeah... but for the love of god... beat someone's ass... doesn't matter who teh Tailback is..if you can get him to the second level... you're going to be successfull... You can even go back to the Hoying/Jackson/and Germaine days... we won damned near all of our games then... even a few close ones... just as an example... Germaine gets a bunch of credit for winning the Rose bowl with his arm... but if you look at the Tape, ASU's Defense was running in concrete shoes (that was for you Luca) why? They got whooped on all day. Iowa 3 weeks ago... same thing... Penn State? No.

Anyway... it gets back to how the Patriots win, how the Steelers win, how the Cowboys used to win... insert good football team here.. and really how you win at football... kick someones ass, run it throw it... whatever...beat them down Physically and mentally... (80 bomb's TD's hurt too) One Unit's got it... the other is a walking schizophrenia ward, IMO.

obviously, some fans have a knee jerk reaction and that is to be expected in the world of OSU football.

I for one believe that our offensive problems go deeper than the quarterback play and many would agree.

Here are my thoughts and take them with a grain of salt...

1. Lack of CONSISTENT play by our offensive line. This has been a problem for 2+ years.

2. Lack of CONSISTENT play by our quarterback position. Its hard to replace a player like Krenzel.

3. Lack of a CONSISTENT offensive philosphy. Are we a true spread offense or a spread running team?

Now, those are the big areas of concern with this team, how do we fix it?

There are several ways to try to fix these areas....

1. Concerning our offensive line, maybe a different philosphy up front would be good for this group, execution has been lacking at different times and it has really hurt us in the last two years.

2. The quarterback position is asked by Coach Tressel not to turn the ball over and make good decisions, he is not asked to carry the team, there is plenty of talent around the QB that he will not have to. At this point, neither Zwick or Smith have shown on a consistent basis they have the tools to lead this type of offense. The least the staff could do would be to simplify the offense and do what they do best, which I don't has translated to the games at this point.

3. Our offensive philosphy has dramtically changed over the past year, we went from a running team to a spread offense and we are experiencing the growing pains that go along with such a dramatic change in offenses. The reason we are struggling is basically execution. The plays they are running in the games are the same ones they are practicing but the execution is not translating to the games. Its very frustrating.

Better play by our offensive line will improve our chances of moving the ball on offense.
