I cheated and looked up the answer after I posted...sounds like things have changed since I last reported at age 8. I assumed otherwise, tbh
Updated version of the NASA Study Steve19 linked... but more undersigning institutional acronyms including NOAA.

Let me explain why I asked this question and posted a poll...

I'm no news junkie or policy wonk or social activist, but I more-or-less keep up with what's what. I recall the HUGE "crisis" about the hole in the ozone layer back in the day, and then... crickets.

I attended a graduation dinner last week at my kids' school. The school principle (an in-yer-face Scottish no-sugar-coating kilt-wearing guy everybody loves) pulls a Jerry McGuire in front of the graduates and shows a part of Greta Thunberg's TED talk / rant / lecture / plea. And he basically puts it out in front of everyone, including the graduates to go and do something. Now. Mic drop. Floats off the stage.

I"m sitting there thinking, "Man. Sh*t. That's some serious pistol-waving and what not."

The other day I'm listening to a podcast where a bunch of people are reflecting on the recent uproar about Greta Thunberg. One of the people on the podcast is saying he doesn't understand why folks aren't lining up behind Greta. And he's saying he doesn't understand why folks aren't buying into the "crisis" and taking action, especially given the fact that the last time we had a "crisis" like this was in the 80's and 90's with ozone depletion. And he's saying that the hole in the ozone is shrinking and will soon close up completely due to humanity's "collective action".

So I hit rewind like 6 times. The f*ck did he say? Did he say the ozone is repaired? Rip Van Winkle. Rip Van Shetuck. Damn. How the freaking hell did I miss that? I felt like a retard (more than usual). How did I not know this?

And, yeah, I'm not getting on the climate change "bandwagon" because I'm not 100% sure this sh*t is real since I haven't independently verified it for myself. So I'll let those who know better, or at least claim to know better, to duke it out. Much smarter guys out there than me. And I'll just get behind whoever wins... Patriots, Warriors, Yankees, whatever. And I'm also not going to willingly go stand in a line to get on a train I know is headed to faildom. Not gonna do it.

Then it occurred to me that maybe there are others out there who also maybe don't know. And it occurred to me that if others maybe don't know, maybe that's why a reasonable proportion of honest hardworking folks are saying Greta Thunberg is a freak and climate change is a ruse, and we'd all be better off not getting too worked up about it all. Maybe others are also not interested in queuing up to get on board a mother of all fake news trains, headed to the most epic fail of all time.

So... then I started wondering why the climate activists aren't "celebrating" this "achievement" as a way to raise hope and support and buy-in? But that's a different poll. Maybe for another off-season.

Ruminating that past international agreements to stop man made climate change (like the Montreal Protocol for limiting CFCs seemingly leading to the successful beginning of the repair of the Ozone layer) as a possible reason for opposition to currently proposed international agreements attempting to stop global warming seems - well - like a path I would not have chosen.

As to honest hardworking folks saying climate change is a ruse, well, honest hardworking and smart are all fine qualities. Some folks have none, some have all, and some have - well - some.

Back to you.

The point, Gator, is that all the activists would have a much better chance getting everybody behind them (hardworking, smart, or not) if they'd realize that the success of the closing the hole in ozone is poorly advertised.

If the activists want folks to get behind them and take action, then you gotta show them that said actions will have a good result... like the collective action to reduce ozone depletion.

The activists and TEDsters ranting and raving can't take the "let them eat cake approach".

Rather than spending all their time frothing at the mouth about how we're all going to die, spend a little bit of time saying, "Hey, first of all, I want to say good job to everybody for closing the Ozone hole. What we did, collectively, worked. We averted a big crisis. Here's the next challenge I want us to solve by working together..."

This is where you're wrong. It IS advertised.

The problem is the advertisement doesn't run on the channels where it will reach the audience most in need of convincing.

Basically true...

You wouldn't have known had it not been for your AC repairman.
I wouldn't have known were it not for some random TED talk that came up on my podcast list.

Point is, I don't think either of us lives under a rock, yet we didn't know.

Get to work then, I'm sure folks will kick in to help.
