What will the Browns do with their 1st round pick?

Devil's Advocate...

How did Tom Brady's career in college stack up vs his pro career?

QB is a total crapshoot. It's the system and the environment. Kurt Warner came out of bush league to play in a quick-hitting turf-offense that suited the strengths that Arena taught him which were lightning quick reads/releases. He also had Orlando Pace & Co.

The Browns don't have an environment that is conducive to productive quarterbacking with zero ability for the line to open holes and virtually no threat of a running game. The passing game suffers as a result as a shell-shocked QB winds up running around everywhere and just gunning because his all world receivers told him to just toss it up.

Derek Anderson looked better last year because he knew the line wouldn't hold so he just made the quick read and delivered.

There's no foundation on either front and this team has been so focused on picking fantasy players since it re-emerged that have been hit and miss that there's no player or coaching continuity. Lerner'd be wise to just let Savage and Crennel stay around for a while and build a foundation.

Of course this is all stuff that is c.p.k. (common public knowledge).

If CJ is on the board at 3 there is no reason that he shouldn't be the pick. Whether or not the Browns take him is the question. It would be dumb for them not to force Tampa to trade up.
This was my response in the 2007 NFL draft thread to a rumor that Oakland had offered Quinn a "low ball" figure as the #1 pick.

I wouldn't hold out hope on that. Him accepting a "low-ball" offer for a team I can't imagine anybody wanting to play for seems about as likely as Charlie Weis passing on dessert. In a perfect world, the Raiders grab Russell and the Lions snatch Quinn (I actually think Quinn could excel in Martz's system). That leaves the Browns to trade down with Atlanta who seem to really want CJ and stockpile additional draft picks.
I think Atlanta is the team chomping at the bit to move up for CJ. They have plenty of picks to use as leverage. A part of me still really wants AD, but the recent rumors about him reinjuring his collarbone worries me. All we need is a built in injury. CJ is a special talent, but I don't see him helping the Browns as much as trading down to gather additional picks to fill the other holes. Next years draft will be loaded with RB's too, or we could snag Pittman in round two (provided we gain another 2nd rounder in a trade), which would satisfy me. We could use our first rounder to help one of the lines, go CB early in round two, and hopefully grab Pitt as well. Then use the rest of the draft to fill other needs or go BPA.
