The difference being that Ohio State's defensive staff carried over mostly intact.

Charlie Strong was DC during the Zook years and Meyer kept him at Florida for continuity. He gutted the OC staff and brought Dan Mullen and hired a new S&C coach and recruiting coordinator.

I picked 10-2. The Offense certainly has a lot to prove with a completely new system, but it won't take much to improve on last season. I also think the Defense will improve with a bit more depth than last season. Heck, I even expect our Special Teams to improve. I can see maybe losing 2 games...

Charlie Strong's defenses weren't very good before Meyer. They averaged 21 pts a game given up for at least the previous three years (02-04).

That isn't the case with the Ohio State staff, their defenses were consistently among the very top nationally.

It's early August - there are no consequences for unreasonable optimism - I'm going with the 12-0. Heck, I'll say the Buckeyes will be so overwhelming that Mark Emmerit will personally intervene and waive the bowl ban. :)

I'll go with 10-2. OSU has a lot of questions, but the schedule doesn't have any great teams on it.

Miami
Cal
UAB
UCF
@ Indiana
@ Penn St.

should all be wins. Giving the opponent every benefit of the doubt,

Purdue
Illinois

should still be wins, being in Columbus.

That leaves the following:

@ MSU
Nebraska
@ Wisconsin
UM

I just don't see OSU losing more than two of those four games.

Agreed. MSU has some new players at key positions. I'm just not convinced Nebraska will be much better this season than last. Wisky also lost some key players as well as a large chunk of their coaching staff. Then there's scUM who was lucky enough to beat us last season...

I have them going for the gusto, and running the table.

Reasons:

#1. We return almost every starter on a defense that was #21 for points allowed in 2011, while having an offense that ensured our defense was on the field all day. I think they'll be a top-10 defense throughout the year, and keep most teams under 20pts.

#2. Our offense will be vastly better than last year, which was a few points away from going 10-3. If #1 happens, then the offense doesn't have to score 40pts a game, because we'll know that 4 TDs will generally win us any given Saturday.

#3. I really don't see world-beaters on our schedule this year. MSU and Wiscy are obviously the big two to worry about. But even then, I think we match up better against them this year than last year by far.

It'll be a good season. Purdue will be much improved, but our OOC schedule is weak, and I've been looking forward to what we'd see this season even before 2011 started, since we'd be returning so many great players. Worst case scenario, we go 10-2 losing at MSU and Wiscy, but I think its unlikely we lose both.

Having said all of that, I'm eyeing the Michigan St. - Boise game. If MSU can pull out a win, I'll be pretty concerned for our meeting.

To those who may be a tad concerned about Nebraska, keep in mind that we were taking them to the woodshed, on their field, until Miller got hurt. This year we have them at home and as long as Miller stays healthy I dont see this as much of a game.

I can see going 12-0 and not winning the AP National Championship. If Alabama, LSU, or USC goes undefeated it will probably be virtually impossible to pass them in the AP poll as our SOS is not that tough.
