My truck is a 4X4. Turn the knob and it goes from 2 wheel to 4 wheel.
My wife's explorer is AWD. All wheels turn driven by the engine. I think it is a 60 rear, 40 front split.

Anyone have locking hubs?

Four wheel drive is my favorite, since 98% of the time I'm in rear wheel drive anyway. Getting out of a skid is a reflex in my truck, whereas in my front wheel drive car it takes a second.

That being said:biggrin: , for most idiot drivers, I would suggest AWD.

My wife's car is AWD and I prefer mine in the snow. She loves her's for the same reason I prefer mine. She has always driven an AWD car.

My understanding of the difference between 4-wheel and AWD is that 4WD is usually all the time 4 wheel drive while AWD is primarily FWD and RWD kicks in when necessary.

I prefer front wheel or AWD if I had the money for one. My first and 3rd cars were rear wheel and that is my least favorite in the snow. Front sucks when you're trying to take off on wet or icy roads, but it isn't very hard to control. My buddy has an AWD Audi that is the shit.

The only correct choice for the best dry weather driving dynamics in a CAR is RWD. Everything else is just a transportation appliance. Enjoy the run to Kroger's, with a DVD playing while talking on the cellphone in whatever crossover-mini-utility thing is popular this year.

I'll be on the racetrack where it's safe. :tongue2:

Depends where you live... in Wisconsin I had RWD with 4 Wheel Drive... I have that same truck down here and it serves no purpose. It's sucks I haven't been able to use it in over a year.

Down here I think I'd prefer FWD becuase of all the rain. In fact I'm looking for a new vehicle now and I'm leaning towards a car with FWD instead of a truck.

I drive a Yukon with four wheel drive, and have used the four wheel drive option probably twice in two years, if that. It's pointless.

If the choice is between rear and front wheel drive, I would choose rear wheel drive 10 times out of 10. I hate front wheel drive. With rear wheel drive, you can "powerslide", spin out, fishtail, etc. All these things probably sound dangerous to the inexperienced, but are necessary for winter driving. When you have front wheel drive, all you do is lose your steering. Hit your brakes on ice, and the front tires lock up - you lose your steering. Hit the gas on ice, and the front tires lose traction and spin - and you lose your steering. There isn't anything more dangerous than a 2500 pound piece of metal that is sliding out of control because you can't steer. Except maybe rope. Rope is pretty dangerous, it can hang you.

I have to disagree with choosing rear-wheel drive over front wheel drive. Growing up around Zanesville where it is pretty hilly and roads don't get cleared of snow like around here, rear-wheel is pretty dangerous no matter how good of a driver you are.

RWD/4WD I don't use the 4WD that often but when I need it, it is there. Plus I really appreciat sitting up over most everyone else, nothing like being able to see 2-3 sometimes 4 cars ahead. I don't like having to trust the person in front of me to pay attention of something were to happen. Besides, unlike in my wifes toyota no one tries to intimidate me into letting them in just because they didn't feel like waiting in line with everyone else when there is a merge or something.

Oh, and it is a pick up.... SUV's are for soccer mom's and hom>>>>>>> errrrrr ice dancers....
