I have to disagree with choosing rear-wheel drive over front wheel drive.

I'm going to have to agree with Thump on this one. Having your driving wheels also be the ones that steer makes it a heck of a lot easier to control a vehicle on slick surfaces.

Almost all of FKA's points are contrary to my experience.

Same here, but in his defense, if you've never lived in a hilly area with poor snow-removal you'd never know.

Got to go with Thump et al on this one.

Having 4WD available in any good form is a must for me. Da Burg cured me of my addiction to RWD pronto with the first big snow. First 4WD was a Subaru Wagon. More recently this is our chariot of choice.

The availability of 4WD Lo and Hi on this model is an added benefit.

Its not the number of times you do use it - but rather that it is there when you want it. (And the intermediate 4WD option is great for improving stability / handling at highway speeds with slick pavement - plus getting a good straight ahead start from a dead stop).

Nothing in the world makes a dad look cooler to his kids than rear wheel drive in a GMC Sierra. You give me a fresh middle school parking lot with 3 or 4 inches of snow on it and I am the King. My boy loves doing do-nuts with me in my truck. For that brief moment I actually think he loves me more than Elmo or his train set.

my personal preference is rwd. imo it provides the best combination of performance and control vrs practicality. expecially when paired with a manual transmission. i don't care much for fwd or the false sense of security it seems to provide its owners. primary deceleration, acceleration and steering is far to much to ask of a single axle. 4x4 provides more control in harsh environments. but the mass majority of 4x4 owners will never be in a position to actually need it. so in the end your vehicle is less powerful and uses more fuel for no apparent reason.

I'm going to have to agree with Thump on this one. Having your driving wheels also be the ones that steer makes it a heck of a lot easier to control a vehicle on slick surfaces.

problem is if your front tires loose traction you loose full control of the vehicle. thats not to say fwd is the devil. i simply feel people think fwd is alot safer than it really is.

NO clue which type of "drive" my car is.. I know if I start to slip and slide I can just push this button and it makes it all better.. Now, if my intent is to do donuts and such then I just take the Misters' car, it has no special button
