Was thinking about this today while driving today, listening to 97.1. They were talking about tempering expectations for 2011 due to the loss of a lot of players + the suspension.

Since Tressel became tOSU's coach, we have had only two seasons without double-digit wins. Both seasons were well in the past, and Ohio State knows more about winning than Charlie Sheen.

In your view, during the regular season, what W/L record would become an official disappointment for you? Obviously, we all expect Ohio State to run the table and go to the NC game, but in the event of losses, where would you revoke your belief the season was successful?

Personally, it would be a disappointment if we went 9-3 or worse in the regular season (excluding the B10 title game). That would likely put us out of the B10 title game, and be the first non-BCS berth for Ohio State since 2004's team that stomped Lester's Festers in the Alamo bowl.

My expectations are the same as they are for every season. Beat M*ch*g*n, win the Big Ten, go to the Rose Bowl and/or be in the hunt for the national championship.

I'm not lowering my expectations because certain players and coaches made poor decisions that will make this coming season more difficult than it had to be.

Of course we all have those expectations, but does that mean that, to you, if we don't do one of those things its considered a bad, disappointing season?

In my view, if we go 9-3 before the championship/bowl games, we've likely lost most of our key games (Miami, Nebraska, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Michigan), which would put us out of a lot of end-season possibilities. Even if we went 10-2, we'd have a good shot at the championship game and potentially a BCS berth with a win in the B10 championship game.

Anything less than 10 wins would be a disappointment, so far as I'm concerned. Of the 5 games that Tress and company will miss, I'm only mildly concerned about the Miami game, and I suppose I have some pause for the Sparty game...

As for the rest of the year... Nebby, and Wiscy bother me the most. I expect Michigan to be Michigan again, but they aint got the horses yet. Still, it's Michigan and therefore a must win.

I don't think everybody shares those expectations. 9-3 is usually verboten in Buckeye Nation and now people are apparently kicking around the idea. (EDIT: Nobody on here is saying 9-3 would be acceptable (yet), and I didn't hear the radio show, but when I hear the phrase "tempering expectations" I think that's what's being hinted at.)

I'm reluctant to put a number on it in advance. The acceptable record needs to be placed in the context of the larger college football season. It's not likely, but possible that this team could have a 9-3 regular season but still win The Game, get to the Big Ten CCG and win that for a berth to the Rose Bowl. It's also possible that this team goes 10-2 and misses out on most of those goals.

Even that's a disappointment to me because they just don't win prettily enough. :pissed:
If your rooting interests were a bit more flexible, there could be a remedy for that.
