What used car would you buy

Golfer - the others have given good advice about the monetary aspect, but also consider this - you don't want to show up for your first job out of school with the hottest car in the parking lot. Believe me, people will know, and they will talk. Get something sort of conservative and relatively cheap - you certainly don't want the boss thinking that he's paying you too much.

You can really get some pretty cool, relatively conservative used cars these days that have lots of power. 10-20 years ago 250 HP was unreal. Now you can buy any one of a dozen 4 door sedans with 250-300 HP. I would guess you could get nice Acura TL, Maxima, Infiniti G35, Lexus IS 300, or possibly a GS300 that are 2-3 years old for around 15-20k. All cool cars w/ 4 doors so they are easier on the insurance, do not call attention to you, but are very fun to drive.

I appreciate the advice all. Perhaps I'm a bit greedy, I drive a 95 Maxima SE with just under 120k and it's the 1st year they went with the rounded edges. Great car but the little fixings are beginning to add up. Definitely gonna start saving for retirement first...learned you make more there your 1st 5 years than your last 15.

student loan interest is deductable if you itemize
Actually, its an adjustment to adjusted gross income in order to reach taxable income and you get to reduce income by the interest amount, regardless of whether or not you itemize. Also, the phaseout starts when modified AGI reaches $50,000, so that may not be an issue for a couple years.

back on topic: for used cars, you cannot beat one of these:

Wasn't trying to burst your bubble... just trying to point you in the right direction.

I had a mustang many moons ago... fun car to drive (a bit tight/small inside)... The Honda S 2000 can move. I'd def check that out if you want a sports car (much more reliable than it's american counter parts)... although it has a v-tech four banger (gets a nice chunk of HP out of it though)...

Katt,

details, details... :tongue2:

im half looking into the viability of finding a hummer (ex military h1 version) for a project. i don't really "need" a new car right now. but the beater truck is 11 years old. should have another 2 - 3 years left. so if i could find something with a decent frame and body (engine + tranny not needed) for the right price at an auction or something i think it would be a very enjoyable project car.

I agree with the above that you should hold off on a muscle car until you're in your late 20s/early 30s. Otherwise you'll be hammered both on insurance and fuel prices. Secondly, you don't want a muscle car for an everyday car, especially if you live in an area where you'll be dealing with snow. Ideally you'd want something that you can pamper, drive around in the summer, and park in a garage in the winter.

A good, reliable used car that would feel comfortable coming from a Maxima would be any of the 4th generation Camrys (97-01; though I think the 00 & 01 body styles looks the best). You could pick up a 3.0L V6 Camry XLE with leather and power-everything for about $11,000, and it shouldn't be too difficult to find one that was leased by some 60 year old non-smoker who never drove it up past 35mph. It'd hold its value, you could reasonably pay it off in 2 years, and wouldn't need to put a dime into it for at least 3 - 5 years.

The 2-door V6 Solara convertible looks more sporty and still comes in under $13,500.

For a car you want to keep on the cheap for 5 years out of college while getting on your feet, I think you'd be foolish to choose anything other than a Toyota or Honda.
