Just watched the documentary 20 Feet from Stardom, about the black female backing vocalists that appeared uncredited on damn near every single hit from the 60s, 70s, and 80s, until grunge and boy bands put them out of work. Absolute masterpiece. 5/5.
Merry Clayton and Darlene Love are heavily featured in the film. Merry Clayton, in particular, belted out the scream “Rape. Murder. It’s just a shot away” in Gimme Shelter to the point that singing while four months pregnant induced a miscarriage after the recording session. The film includes an isolated recording of her vocals that is just goosebump inducing.
