Not listening to much of anything right now. Saw a show Friday night at a place that holds maybe 200 people. Face to Face was the headliner. It was loud. Mind you, I've seen loud, very very loud. Husker Du was loud, Sugar was deafening loud... Violent Femmes at the Ohio Union in '89 (I think... winter freshman year anyhow) was painful, so was the Smitheens on the 11 tour at the Newport (right in front of the mixing board even), Rancid, Drop Kicks, Social D in the right setting... tons of shows at the Newport in school and various smaller venues in Chicago as an adult... All really loud. Friday night I swear was the second time I feared for permanat damage to my hearing. I've been in pain before... ringing ears for a couple of days... but never have I walked away from a show where my hearing was so shot that there were entire bands of the audio spectrum that were completely lost for two days. I'm just beginning to recover now.
Not only was it loud but I totally forgot to get tickets. Sold out for weeks and a 200 person room isn't good odds of scoring an extra. So I went to the bar wearing flip flops and brought zero ear protection. Just wasn't thinking at all.
Anyhow, I ran into Scott Schifflet the bass player in the parking lot when I was parking. Asked him he he had any extras as a joke. He laughed and I offered to tote his bass for him. He was really gracious and said, 'man, I've looked this place over, it looks pretty easy to get into. Just pretend you're 16 again.' 30 years later I'm sadly far less punk than I used to be.
Scored a ticket anyhow.
Opening band was Counterpunch. They should have been called Suckerpunch because by the end of their set i was already in a bad way.
F2F takes the stage and it was just like the old days. I cannot tell you the last time I was at a show where multiple people were stage diving. Nobody kicked out for it either. Totally old school show and a really solid pit. Not Rancid elbows and knees flying kind of pit, but I could have lifted my legs during most songs and not touched the ground for 15-30 seconds. Oh, and I managed to retain my sandals, my watch, my phone and keys without getting stepped on too badly.
At 46 I'm too old to do this shit very much, but the old soul punk in me needed that more than I knew. Made me feel 19 again.
I'm not one to take a lot of pics at a show. I'd rather just enjoy it and be there in the experience. However, since it had been a while, I couldn't help myself.
So, when thI hearing fully recovers I'll be making a playlist of the set and listening to what I should have heard.
If you're a F2F fan, do go see this tour. They are playing a bunch of these micro venues on this leg. Well worth the pain.
