What role will the TE's play this year?

They Call Me Assassin
I know there are individual threads for each of the tight ends, but this is more of a general question so I thought a seperate thread would be better. Besides, I didn't want to go back and forth between 3 or 4 threads to get insight on this situation.

So here's my questions:

1.) With Frost gone for the year now, who will be the 2nd TE?
2.) Will the loss of Frost change the role of the TE in our offensive game plan? I know we run two TE sets quite a bit, but will that change now?

I look forward to hearing your input.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Coach Tressel use OL guys last year in some of the two "TE" sets. I also don't remember Troy using the TE's in a lot of passing situations. There was one in the fourth quarter of THE Game and once or twice in the Fiesta Bowl, if I am remembering correctly.

I don't think that this is a season ending loss for the team, but I am a little worried about the depth at that postion now.

Personal Note: I would have given (and still would give) anything to have been a part of tOSU football. I hope what young Mr. Frost did was worth the sacrifice.

TE's haven't seemed to play much of a role lately in OSU's offense. We have a solid O-line forming and WR's out the a**. I don't think the TE's role will change, nor is it anything that Rory Nicol can't handle.

Just throw in an extra lineman for the run-game (ala Michigan). The loss of Frost hurts, because he was slated to be our starter, but it is the Tight End position we are talking about.

Whenever you lose a starter (he was #1 on the depth chart) at a position where there is not a lot of experience, it is going to hurt your team. Frost was definitely in the Offensive game plan as a recieving threat.

With that being said, Nichol can fill that role and Brandon Smith, who has game experience as a TE, will be our 2nd TE, used primarily as a blocker, much like he was last year.

What this means though is that we will most likely have to put either Ballard or Miller into the action as Freshman because of Frost's indiscretion. My guess is that Ballard is the more prepared of the two right now and that he serves as our third TE.

There is an outside chance that someone like a Hoobler can step in and play TE. He did get some reps at TE during the Spring Game and so it is not too far of a stretch to see that happening and might be our best option. May be a way to get Hoobs on the field with Kerr and MDA ahead of him at MLB. The more I think of it, the more I like that option and let Ballard red shirt.

Finally, Stan White Jr. can also serve as our third TE, and can also be a recieving threat. He's going to have his hands full at FB/HB but he's a solid option.

Reviving an old thread for the TE discussion.

ozone.2008/offense

Tight Ends: Tight ends Rory Nicol and Jake Ballard got most the snaps last season, and both return in 2008. Nicol had a decent, but not great season as a receiver but was a solid hard-nose, tough blocker. Ballard emerged as a bona fide pass catching threat and also had a good year as a blocker.

Both are big, rugged players and will be valuable assets next fall.
Brandon Smith will also return next fall. Smith is stuck behind Nicol and Ballard on the depth chart and may actually be a prime candidate for a move to fullback should the Buckeyes decide to bolster that position by drafting a player from another position.
Returning Scholarship Players:
Rory Nicol (6-5, 250, rising senior),
Jake Ballard (6-7, 255, rising junior),
Brandon Smith (6-3, 255, rising 5th-year senior).

Returning Walk Ons:
J. D. Larson (6-4, 220, rising redshirt junior)

Newcomers:
Nic Dilillo (6-5, 245)
