What player, past or present, best embodies the spirit of Ohio State Fotball?

what about paul brown. coach who was a commissioned officer of the us navy? yeah yeah theirs the lou groza contract thing but still. he lost a heckuva a recruiting class to the draft. many of his players from the 42 team left to serve in the army.

what about lee tressel? he played spring ball at ohio state in 1943 then entered the v12 program.

Archie. He's the classiest guy (character of the program), the only Heisman 2-timer (history, excellence of the program), and has been the face of the football team, athletic program and alumni association for years.

Archie all the way for me.

While Antonio Smith was always a special player for some reason in my eyes and I thought highly of him.... (maybe it was just the dreads haha not really...) anyways you gotta give it to Archie he just is an image of Ohio State football....

I think Tim Anderson deserves a mention. He was the least heralded player on the 2002 D line, but IMO was really the anchor that allowed the others to shine. Great feet and hands, was a big reason why no one could run against that squad.

I would like to give special mention to the guys who play on the scout team. Some of them work their way up to the starting lineup, but many are anonymous to all outside of the program. Those guys have the added pressure of learning a new playbook every week, trying to emulate the styles of players they have only seen on film, and going up against first stringers every day in practice. Their effort and dedication is just as important to the teams success as the play of the starters. Tressel makes sure to honor them in press conferences with the other players of the week, something I have not heard of other coaches doing. Some of them never receive the accolades that their teammates do, but their spirit is just as strong.

Troy Smith stick out specifically because of that interview with him and Jamarcus Russell during the NC game this year. This interview had them side-by-side, and....Pure class, that's all that I need to say about Troy.

Spielman, he was another breed of LB back in the day, and now he has done a lot for the university by donating money, he needs to be mentioned

(edit: he has been mentioned numerous times, but it doesn't hurt to keep piling on, I think the general consensus is Spielman is definitely top 5 if we were going to make a list)

He also manages to be unabashedly pro Ohio State (and more generally pro Ohio) when he is announcing without being too over the top about it, Herbstreit should take lessons from him on how to announce.

I was watching one game with Spielman announcing, and I forget who was playing, but they were talking about another game and the other announcer asked who would win the other game, and Spielman said something like, "the coach of [insert team], isn't he from Ohio? yeah, they're going to win", it was pretty funny and a good example of why Spielman is and always will be an Ohio boy who bleeds scarlet and gray.

Another plus he has going for him is it seems like he would fit in on this board. He is as much of a fan of Ohio State as any of us it seems like.
