Moving to a house off a golf course. Anyone have any advice on how much I should spend on a first set of clubs? Or things to look for or stay away from?
Most sporting goods stores will carry a complete set (including putter, bag, etc.) for around $250-300 - for something basic like Top Flite. Those are fine if you play occasionally or just for fun and would probably last you 3-5+ years.

If you see yourself playing consistently for years or trying to get good at it, I’d consider a better set (Calloway Rogues, e.g.) which might run you $500-750 for just the irons. At that quality, drivers and woods/hybrids tend to be $200 apiece, maybe $125-150 on sale. Gets expensive quick. If you’re going that route you can get by with a driver, 3W, maybe a hybrid, irons 4 through wedge, and a putter.

If you’re buying a full set online, look closely at which clubs the set includes (varies widely).
