NEW YORK -- Crickets do not taste like chicken.
But saut? them with a little olive oil and some spices and they are surprisingly edible, with a nice crunch and a subtle nut flavor. Their little legs do tend to get stuck between your teeth, though.

When China was preparing for the Olympics, the tourism authorities were worried that some of the literal menu translations used by restaurants here would be unappetizing to visitors. So according to a story in China Daily written by Xin Dingding (really), the Chinese government issued a pamphlet suggesting that hotels and restaurants use tamer names for such traditional menu translations as (I am not making these up) ''Husband and Wife's Lung Slice'' and ``Chicken Without Sexual Life.''
I'm with the Chinese tourism authorities on this one. If I'm eating a chicken, the last thing I want to be thinking about is whether or not it had a sexual life.
Which brings us to sheep penis on a stick. This is the bad news, the dark side of Chinese food: it can be scary. Sheep penis is only one of the alarming things on sticks being sold openly at the Wangfujing (Yes, ''Wangfujing'') Night Market in downtown Beijing. Other items you can buy there on sticks include seahorses, centipedes, scorpions, snake (regular and sea), silkworm, fried chicken heart, fried sleeve-fish head and something called ''mealie.'' I saw one woman who was grimly whacking away with a cleaver at a pile of squirming gray slime.

Many Chinese have little to eat so even what we consider "domestic" animals(Pets) are fair game. My father had a nice pasta meal in Italy after it was liberated during WWII. What was that meat in the sauce? :tongue2:

There was a segment on this last night.. during Olympics about same topic.. they said "the only thing on four legs not eaten in china is a chair"

Showed scorpions, duck heads, beaks and feet, I think cow dung and fungus soup, some animal lips, etc...

Got a world traveler relative who said they ate brains, penises and organs while in China... said it might be OK if it didn't look so disgusting when presented... at least fried it's masked a bit.. but slimy on the plate...

I think I threw up a little bit in my mouth just now

So what is the philosophical musing part regarding weird food in China? If this was just a thread about weird food, it could have gone in work safe or horse shoes and hand grenades. What is your musing, Tao?

Isn't it interesting that a largely Buddhist country would eat just about everything? :tongue2: Probably add people to the list, also. Of course, communists hold no such reservations about eating animals, and people!

Personally, I actually expect an answer to a question like this. "It tastes nutty with a hint of cardamom, pine and angst." or whatever, so it's a sensory descriptive request. Not particularly a philosophical musing in my eyes. I am moderately intrigued as to what your thought process is that makes it seem so to you.
