Alright I'm looking for some new authors to read. Have read a ton of Crichton and Clive Cussler. Given that Crichton is dead and Cussler getting up there and later works are kinda iffy. Might start one of Lee Childs Jack Reacher novels.

Looking for something new to read...

I liked Crichton and Cussler, and I'd recommend the Lee Child books - I've read them all in the last 18 months.

The Stephen Hunter recommendation is also a good one.

Jack Reacher and Bob Lee Swagger are great characters. I've read both series of books in order, and think it's better that way.

Simmons is one of my top 4-5 favorite authors (up there with Pat Conroy, Tim Powers & Peter S. Beagle) and the Hyperion Cantos is arguably my favorite sci-fi series.

The man is simply amazingly talented.

That's good to hear, I have been thinking about that Hyperion series for awhile now...

I jumped right into "A Winter Haunting" next, the sequel to "Summer of Night", and the grownup Dale Stewart character is even more of a stand-in for the real Dan Simmons than the adolescent version. Interesting that in the 2002 book Stewart is planning to write a novel about Little Big Horn from the perspective of the Indians, and then 8 years later Dan Simmons releases "Black Hills".

Don't know your style, but if you've never checked out Orson Scott Card or Frank Herbent, then I say, "Jump On!". Of course, I'm going through that NPR Top 100 list that Muck presented a while ago; therefore, I'm reading a LOT of authors that I had no familiarity with. Neil Gaimon's "American Gods" is a kick ass read.

I'm a typical American... i like my hero's bad ass, put in situations where its realistically impossible to get out of and they do it...

Point of Impact by Stephen Hunter

It's the book that the movie Shooter was based on. Hunter has written another six books in the series.

GySgt Bob Lee Swagger won't disappoint.

Or you could go old school with The Man Who Would Be King by Rudyard Kipling or Jack London's Call of the Wild.

Thanks I'll add it to my list

Muck convinced me:

Hyperion.jpg

"Hyperion" by Dan Simmons. It's been a long time since I read some hardcore sci-fi, and it took a couple tries to get through the jargon-heavy prologue, but then it really got going for me.

It's structured like the Canterbury Tales, with 7 travelers each telling their story on a pilgrimage to the Shrike (a fairly terrifying literary creation), and Simmons loads up on the John Keats allusions. The man knows his literature and history and religion, and the way he fills in the gap between now and this far-ahead future is truly astonishing. I'm really excited to get back to this book tonight.

"The Fall of Hyperion" - Dan Simmons

Fall-of-Hyperion-Front-Book-Cover.gif

Hyperion's 6 stories-within-a-story of what brought each of the pilgrims back to the planet Hyperion were really emotionally captivating and powerful (the one about Sol Weintraub and his daughter Rachel, pictured on the cover above, really got to me), but in this one, the shit is hitting the fan. The Hegemony, the Ousters, the TechnoCore in a universe-wide cage match! Don't be put off by all the scifi jargon, as it's really the characters and ideas that make these such great books.

Dan Simmons is the man.

Was greatly disappointed by the ending to The Game of Thrones. Truly let down by the lack of ending(s) to the characters. Was a bit put off by the separate chapter threads per character, but grew to enjoy them. Had a hunch when I got down to the last hunnerd pages that the author was trying to make a deadline to publish and not do justice to the other 4.75 books he wrote.

Hope the TV series ends better. You're right Bay Buck, I got too wrapped up in the argot, and lost interest. I'll try again, as those that gutted it out were pleased. Never did find out who's in the prickly suit of armor......
