Random House Donovan Campbell was awarded a Bronze Star with Valor for his time in Iraq.

March 5, 2009
Former Marine Donovan Campbell served three combat deployments, two in Iraq and one in Afghanistan. In Iraq, he commanded Joker One, a platoon of new Marines that he trained and transformed into a fighting unit. They were assigned to Ramadi, the capital of the Sunni-dominated Anbar province where they engaged in daily house-to-house combat with insurgents.
Campbell has written a memoir about his experiences with the platoon called Joker One: A Marine Platoon's Story of Courage, Leadership, and Brotherhood. Part of the proceeds from the book will go to various nonprofit organizations that help veterans, wounded soldiers and military families.

"The Magicians" - Lev Grossman
magicians.jpg

Like the reviews say, it's pretty much Harry Potter Goes to College, except he and his friends make it through 5 years of wizarding university all in one book, then go out into the real world (and other worlds) as graduate-magicians. The references to Harry Potter and Narnia and Tolkien are direct rather than allusive, as they are books the characters would have read in their own lives, though of them Narnia is the biggest influence on this story. The writing seemed a little showy at first, like it's written by someone who works for Time Magazine (which it is), but once the plot got going I wasn't groaning quite as often.
