Interesting that you enjoyed Wizard and Glass so much. I was enjoying the series quite a bit until I got there. After finishing it, I lost all enthusiasm and just can't find the motivation to finish the story.

I made a mistake in my previous statement. I always get these backwards for some reason, but anyway... the time frame after The Waste Lands is what bothered me the most.

I readily admit that the Dark Tower series isn't for everyone. I just enjoyed the entire thing. Maybe the schizophrenic nature of it suits me to a "t".

I just couldn't buy in completely for the last three books.

Light sabers, Dr. Doom, sneetches, King as a character, the lame final battle...something broke inside King when he was hit by the van, and I don't mean physically.

Something related to his Dark Tower vision maybe, but beyond that I think Stephen King has done some of his better story-telling (if not writing) since the accident.

I've been a fairly obsessive Constant Reader since middle school, but after "The Drawing of the Three" I never really cared about the Dark Tower, basically just wanted him to get it out of his system.

Tales From Watership Down - I've been meaning to read this forever but it's always seemed to slip back in the queue.
Finally opened it today.

Understand completely. There was something "forced" about it. I just decided that I wanted to tag along for the ride regardless of whether it matched the quality from beforehand. To be honest, I had yearning for something so hard since Wizards and Glass that I just wanted to see how it all ended. Or maybe I just wanted some sort of ending for closure.

I get that as well. The things that bothered me never stopped me from continuing until the end, they just made me cringe periodically.

Ironically the ending, ending (what happens to Roland after he goes through the door) worked fine for me. I know it really bothered a lot of people but it fit perfectly in my eyes.

Except that he's never really gotten it out of his system. Now he seems obsessed with going back and making everything he's ever written fit into the Dark Tower.

That being said my favorite King work was post accident (Tales From a Buck 8).

Urban's Way was a great book, gives a lot of great information about Urban. He has only good things to say about Ohio State and his coaching mentors (including Woody Hayes & Earl Bruce). Most of any coaches' autobiography promotes the coach as the best coach/person in the world; however, in Urban's case we know it is true.

The Information by Martin Amis. I read an article in Smithsonian magazine on Amis and decided to pick up on of his books. Yikes.....this book is way too smart for me. Within the first page-and-a-half, I ran into several words I didn't know and probably a half-dozen metaphors that were completely wasted on me. I'm up to page 14 now.

Wheel of Time

Just got in the mail my pre-ordered copy of The Wheel of time. Book fourteen and twenty years in the making. Named "A Memory of Light". I'm only 41 pages into the 900+ pages, yet there are new strands to follow, and not bringing them all together to a conclusion. Actually afraid to read, as am afraid that it will not satisfy. The Game of Thrones last book was very dissatisfactory in that regard.

Oh well, have all the hardbacks in this legend, and have my wife hooked as well, so will not dally and will finish, and hope that the threads are all finished, and sealed off to my satisfaction. Need a Mick Jagger on this one.

Was greatly disappointed by the ending to The Game of Thrones. Truly let down by the lack of ending(s) to the characters. Was a bit put off by the separate chapter threads per character, but grew to enjoy them. Had a hunch when I got down to the last hunnerd pages that the author was trying to make a deadline to publish and not do justice to the other 4.75 books he wrote.

Hope the TV series ends better. You're right Bay Buck, I got too wrapped up in the argot, and lost interest. I'll try again, as those that gutted it out were pleased. Never did find out who's in the prickly suit of armor......

Your two posts in this thread complain about the ending to the Game of Thrones. The series "A Song of Ice and Fire" (Game of Thrones) isn't over. There are at least two more books coming out. I don't know if he's going to end it in a satisfactory way, but there's no "ending" to the characters, because the story isn't over.

Great. Thought Book 5 was the finale. I did grow to enjoy the separate threads (chapters) on each. Never seen a novel written that way, but looked forward to my favorite character threads. Any idea when they come out? Don't have HBO so haven't seen many of the TV shows about TGoT, so don't know how closely the books and TV shows follow. They sure kill off a bunch of characters, I guess whoever is left standing gets the Throne.....

Thanks

No idea about the forthcoming novels. He is currently writing "The Winds of Winter". The last time I looked it up was a couple months ago, and I'd read that he had 400 pages written, but only 200 of them were final draft quality. At best I think that the 6th book will be out at the end of this year, but Martin has been writing this series since 1996, and only released 5 books, so it's hard to tell when he'll release each novel.

This is my first experience with having to wait for a series, and I don't like it. Now that the Wheel of Time series is done, I'll have to see if I can get those on audio. A one hour commute to work and an increase in work related travel will go a lot smoother if I have a 14 book series at approximately 30 hours of audio per book.
