No kidding. My mother has some horror stories about some of the animals that come into her vet clinic. In fact, I just received this email from her:

Perhaps both??? My information comes from my sister who owns a black lab, owns about 20 books on dogs, watches Animal Planet constantly, and gets as excited about the Eukanuba (sp??) dog show as I do about the Super Bowl.

I'm guessing the rescue ability just came with the breeding, as Labs were bred as working dogs, retrieving nets from the water, and it's a natural transition to "retrieving" drowning sailors. Just tell them "get it!" and they'll grab anything floating, in my experience.

There's a show on Animal Planet that follows animal protection officers around on various calls. Most of them are cases very similar to this; plain and simple neglect.

I don't understand why these people keep the dog; I mean, if you're just going to keep it chained in the backyard, what's the point?

Well, once again, thank you to everyone who offered advice. While I was not completely in favor of adding a dog to our household, I have to admit that I am getting kind of excited to have it around and watch it grow up.

one thing that we did with my chocolate lab, is we built a little extension off our deck and its just a little fenced in area with gravel in it that the goes to the bathroom in. its great cause i dont have to walk all over my yard picking up piles of dog shit. To force her to go there we just got a chain and tied her to the deck so she either could shit on the wood deck or down in the gravel :biggrin:
