That's cool. My dad was always good in training our dogs growing up, so I've just always done it myself. I have no idea what the classes are like, but I'd say there are some things you'll have to do by yourself (like teaching the dog to come while you can catch him). The other thing I would recommend is making him wait before you allow him to eat. Make him sit, then tell him to stay while you pour the food into his bowl. Don't let him eat until you tell him it is ok. This is easy to accomplish when he's a puppy, you just hold him in place while repeating the commands. This accomplishes many things:

1. That you are the master
2. Teaches him to sit
3. Teaches him to stay
4. Teaches obedience
5. Teaches self control

Good advice, FKA. One thing I'd add is to play with his food sometimes while he's eating so that he doesn't get upset if anyone/thing gets near it when he's older. I don't like when dogs get defensive about their food.

I don't think that's necessary. It might be good for the dog to get clawed a few times to get the message!

yeah I agree. If our cat still had claws, then I doubt that my German Shepard would harass her as much....

The newspaper-potty training worked for my dog. If possible, I reccomend getting your dog at a rescue league, because then you would be not only getting a dog for a lot less of price, but also adopting an animal in need of a home.

The other biggies, as far as Im concerned with training are:

Play with their paws and ears a lot while they are on their back (submissive position for the dog.)

Never let the dog through the door first (this goes back to the animal instincts, leader of the pack type thing.)

Never break eye contact with your dog first (again, leader of the pack thing.)

Lets not forget good hygiene, brush your puppys teeth often and clip their nails, they will grow up thinking these two things are normal...

as you can tell from my avatar, i have a husky. you are seeing the extent of his training. he rolls on his back and smiles when he wants attention.

He was not properly trained and was neglected and abused by his previous owner. He was intensely aggressive towards all other animals when we got him. It took me about 6 months to break him of trying to attack any other dogs he saw. He still refuses to come when called if he is outside and not in a fenced in area. he will never be broken of that.

bottom line is to train the dog early. do some moderated sessions where you put the dog and cats together. if either gets aggressive towards the other, intervene as appropriate. sometimes puppies can't tell when the other animal is playing or is pissed off and getting aggressive. puppies also arent aware of their own strength at times. Letting them sort it out themselves may not be the best idea.

Oh... just another heads up... if your lab is anything like our lab you might want to keep the bathroom door closed when you shower. THEY LOVE WATER and have no modesty, they will shower with anyone!

What is this about being able to train dogs? Our lab runs the house. Well, she used to until the boys came along. Hell, we had to buy a king size bed just so the dog could sleep with us. Of course, now she is afraid to climb the stairs and she never leaves the main level.

Seriously, I would echo the one comment about playing with ears in case you are planning on having kids. Our younger one beats the shit out of the dog with his rough-housing and she could care less. If she gets mad she just walks away.

I don't understand my dog regarding baths. He LOVES water and swims all the time, but he HATES baths. When you're bathing him, he acts like he's been beaten and tortured. And he even knows he gets treats and feels great when he's done. Very bizarre.

Last night he got into the mud and we had no choice but to bathe him. Our bathroom was covered in mud.
