Welcome to BuckeyePlanet.

BP has had an excellent run of visiting fans for bowl games and other OOC big games. We are hoping that continues with some solid representatives of Oregon. We have the official game discussion thread here and we have our introduction thread here.

We make an effort to keep a higher level of discussion on this site. Defend your team, debate the stats, and absolutely tell us everything the casual fan does not know about Oregon...but let's have that discussion without the trashtalk.

Again, welcome to BP.

Looking forward to some friendly discussions!

I've been a fan of the Buckeyes for years as they seem to annually slap down the dreaded scUM team. (I grew up in Lansing, and despise everything UofM) I still have affection for the Spartans, but moved to Oregon and adopted the Ducks about 30 years ago.

Congrats on your return to Pasadena. I believe each fan base will be surprised by the other team, come Jan 1st...

I respect the Buckeye's defense, and you know Oregon was greatly coveting your QB...that said, we have a pretty good QB ourselves.

Should be a great contest...strength on strength an outstanding D against an explosive offense...

Cool.

Nice forum. Unlike what I usually see, but I think it's par for tOSU fans. I'm excited to see my Ducks take on the Buckeyes, a program with a storied and continuing tradition of excellence.

When tOSU played in the Fiesta Bowl a few years back for the NC, I was on vacation in Sedona, about 120 miles north of Tempe. The place was crawling with the happiest people clad in red I'd seen since the Rajneeshies left Oregon. I was left really liking tOSU fans, and rooted for you guys.

I'm sure the fans are still classy. But I believe my cheering will be for different reasons this team.

Thanks for the forum, and GO DUCKS!

Anybody who hates scUM can't be all bad.

To you Oregonians, I'm always impressed with your state and your sports traditions/records! In '39, your state defeated Ohio State's BB team to win NCAA in final. tOSU beat your state to win RB in '60s. My son (Beaverton), and S-I-L, OSU, are good Oregon reps. I'm a rabid homer for our Bucks, but I think this RB game will be a real head-knocker. Your offense is exciting to watch; hopefully, our Bucks can bring the D.

Good luck in Pasadena.:osu:

Common opponents

Great site! Thanks for letting Ducks in.

It will be interesting to see what the common opponents will mean in this game.

Oregon beat Purdue before the offence really started to roll. USC? The Ducks showed mercy in the fourth quarter against SC, unlike Stanford.

But timing is everything - USC faded badly, and Purdue rallied.

Those common opponents have to give any Buckeye fan pause. I think most of us feel OSU is a different (and better) team now than the one that lost those two games. Of course, the same could be said for your team and their escape against Purdue. After they way each closed the season I think both teams' fans have reason for optimism. Should be a good one!

Welcome to our boards!

IMO "Common Opponent" is a misnomer. Your team is never the same from game to game nor is your opponent. We are as much the team that lost to Purdue as Oregon is the team that lost to Boise.

The important question is whether Oregon is the team that allowed 146 points in its last four games or the team that allowed 58 in the 5 weeks prior to that. Haven't followed the Ducks enough to know how much of that is due to injuries and how much healthier they will be by Jan 1. But anybody who watched what Bama did to Florida or Nebraska almost did to Texas can tell you - Defense wins Championships.

Welcome Ducks, this is an annual highlight for many on this site. We've had tremendous interactions with Longhorns, Tigers & Cowboys. There were some quality domers but not that many visitors. The only gators that stopped by weren't so classy. We found a few good'uns after the game.

A number of these guys have stuck around and are valued members of this site. One of them even ended up as a moderator, and another is the unofficial moderator of 'scoreboard' :p

Sure. Boise is a distant memory. Ahmen.

Defense does win games, and as the Ducks showed against Stanford, a power running game with an excellent passer is a problem. Oregon does better against run-dominated teams without the big play pass threat. Cal and USC come to mind as teams that couldn't move the ball against the Ducks after not being able to break one free.

Defense against the Oregon offense would seem to be more relevant in this game. All teams this year had difficulty against the Ducks overall team speed. We've watched big plays all year against slow defenses - as in ASU and Ore State among others. Teams like USC and Cal with speed have to be disciplined - overplaying is also a risk.

And then it will turn to conditioning. Most evident in the last few games of the year, after the Ducks fell behind, they outlasted both Arizona and Ore State. The Beavers were winded in the third quarter and didn't score in the fourth.

I have to admit I only saw the USC/OSU game. Is the Buckeye defense fast? USC didn't really try to open up anything so it was kind of hard to tell. How is the conditioning? Can the OSU defense run from side to side of the field for an entire game without tiring? Or will the strategy be to keep the Oregon offense off the field with ball control? Is Prior able to hit the deep routes in order to keep the Ore D out of the box?

Welcome, you appear to be another guy who can talk football. We love those around here. Agreement & compliance are not expected, but backing up opinions with reason & stats or examples is expected/required.

They play very fast and rarely overpursue like USC does.
USC didn't really try to open up anything so it was kind of hard to tell.[/quote[I'd recommend finding a tape of the 09 Fiesta Bowl. The personnel has changed but the defense is pretty similar, and is against a more venerable offense. The results were the same as when OSU faced Vince Young in 05. Great defense, couldn't quite hold on against a late drive to get to 20+ pts.
How is the conditioning? Can the OSU defense run from side to side of the field for an entire game without tiring?
Excellent. The guys who really get gassed are the big uglies, and that is the strength of the defense. OSU has a deep & talented rotation up front.

DE Heyward is a force and can play inside or outside. Gibson is a 3/4 rush end type who is used in similar fashion. DT Worthington is more of a 3/4 DE style guy. DE Williams is an excellent pass rusher and better suited for a spread offense than stuffing a wisconsin OL (though he's not small). DT Denlinger is a solid veteran, DT Larimore is our best DT, he's been dinged up since midseason. He should be available, at what capacity remains to be seen. True frosh DT Simon also plays a vital role in the offense, which is extremely rare for his age. Worthington, Larimore and others were a liability upfront in 07 because of their youth, and they werent freshmen at the time. OSU also uses Rob Rose upfront, who can line up outside or in.
Or will the strategy be to keep the Oregon offense off the field with ball control?
Tressel is all about controlling the outcome. He loves manipulating the way the game is played, and often he'll use ball control, good special teams (which aren't up to his usual standards this year) & suffocating defense to do so.

However, when the situation calls for it, he'll also show an aggressive side, particularly in bowls. In 05, he was very aggressive against Notre Dame, in part because the opposing offense posed a serious threat to put up points. In 06, he knew he had to protect a young defensse and was aggressive all year, to a fault in the title game (when Pittman our RB was gashing their undersized line, one of the rare good things that day).
Is Prior able to hit the deep routes in order to keep the Ore D out of the box?
Not well. He has the arm strength to make all the throws, but he is still working on his accuracy.
