You pose an interesting question concerning the month layoff between games and the potential effect on performance. Tressel's teams at OSU have been less than stellar after a one week bye during the regular season. However, Tressel's bowl teams do not seem to suffer from the same problem in a bowl game. Tressel lost his first bowl game at OSU, but his teams have been well prepared for bowl games since that time.

I expect a hard fought game with the high potential that the Buckeyes defense could wear the Irish down. However, If the Irish take an early lead from a bounce here, there, or a slip on the field-it could get very interesting.
I don't hear this discussed much, but don't you think the layoff between the season and bowls dilutes the competitive edge?..Will the Irish and Buckeyes be the same teams as say, November 15th? We always hear how the SuperBowl teams hate the 2 weeks off. The college guys have at least twice that.

Welcome to the Planet. I think you bring up a good point about the layoff. I can only speak for Tressel coached OSU teams regarding the layoff. They seem to play better in the bowl game than they did in their last game. I'm sure that Charlie will have a great game plan sketched up. It should be a fun one.

I compare Walker to Albert Young. I'm not too worried about him. As I said, if our DTs consistently push NDs guards back a few feet, then the game is over. If Brady can't step up in the pocket we will blow them out. If he can then ND is extremely dangerous. This is my break down of the game

Passing Attack: Notre Dame. Really consistent all year. If we don't force turnovers we could be in troulbe.
Rushing Attack: Ohio State. More consistent than ND. I would NOT be suprised to see an option attack to take advantage of our speed advantage.
Special Teams: Even. Zemaitis is a better punt returner than Ginn but our kick returns are incredible. Our kicker and punter have been solid and so are NDs.
Rush Defence: Ohio State. We are much faster up front than ND.
Pass Defence: Ohio State. More experience and talent.
Coaching: Even. I don't see how you can say Weis is a better coach. What has he done to prove that?

Basically, I see the difference in this game being the speed of our LBs. They take away a bunch of NDs short passing game and make solid tackles. ND then is forced to try and go deep and we can run a cover 3 all day.

Remember, USC does not have a good defence. They were on their heels the entire game I watched. Our defence is much more experienced than that and we attack. I think its gonna be a really fun game to watch either way. My prediction is that the game stays really close up until the end but we get a few late points. OSU-31 ND-24. I wouldn't be suprised to see us put up 40 though. As long as we don't turn the ball over we win this game IMO.

Don't discount the effect of the experience we have (almost) across the board on Defense.

Often the primary tactic to slow down our rush is screens and draws, but you'll repeatedly see our DL and LB correctly reading and subsequently destroying such plays... sure, one or two will work per game, but they're usually less than effective.

Occasionally the bubble screens will move the ball, but without enough consistency to allow an opponent to go to that particular well too often

In other words, it's a good thing that AZ has such great sunsets, 'cause Brady's gonna spend a lot of time looking up at it...

Hey, I'm just glad we're getting the civil domers. Since I've had some free time this week, I've been lurking on most of the more prominent ND forums, and, well... wow. NDFans.com is easily the most civil board out there.

It's funny, just like Northwestern, it's all about the academic smack, and noone will be convinced that OSU is a solid school.
If you were to give them facts such as, "ND tried really hard to get me to attend there (on a full ride) as an undergrad, but I came to OSU because I could get a better education with more opportunities for actual research," They laugh it off, saying that I probably wouldn't have gotten in anyway. If I then follow that with "ND BEGGED me to come to grad school there (again, full ride:)), but I didn't even bother replying because their grad program is a JOKE," well, that'll just get you banned :evil::evil::evil:

I find myself typing a message much like this one 10 times a day, and not submitting, simply because it doesn't really add anything to the conversation. I got tired of restraint, and decided to vent a bit.


Sorry to clutter up the board, and please, ND fans in this thread, don't take it too personally, you've really been great, and we love having you around. The above comments are just frustration being vented.

What's the incentive to play these great out of conference games with the current system? In a typical season, 1 loss can knock you out of the NC game and the SOS gain may not override the risk.

I love the match ups but don't like the BCS system.

Justification for the price of the education (no offense to those who went to private school). College is what you make it. Maintain a good GPA, score well on the post-grad exams -- MCAT, LSAT, GMAT -- and interview well. Then it really doesn't matter where you went to undergrad, unless you're in a highly speciliazed major (ie, Film).

My good friend paid $30,000 a year to go to NYU, I stayed in-state and came out with a total debt of $12,000 versus her $120,000. Then used the savings to invest in graduate education. Guess who will be paying their undergrad loans off until they are in their 50's and gained zero edge in the job market.

That smack gets me fired up too...

a great game and hard fought... Respect to the Irish, after all, Holtz was one of Woody's boys! Good job this year, perhaps we'll meet again on the main stage... or perhaps the BCS will get smart and have an eight game playoff!!! our teams both travel well enough for that!!
