Week 9 Games Discussion

Tough to top the September, 1978 opener between Northwestern and Illinois, a 0-0 tie.

And I distinctly remember the SI football season preview that year saying something like “Northwestern against Illinois: is either team good enough to win this game?”

As our lone spokesperson for the Illini, can you tell us why Champagne - Urbana - not Springfield, not Chicago - but way the hell out in the boonies?

And why after they'd already created Illinois State, a teachers college, right next door in Normal, ten years earlier?

Several cities bid on where to locate the new U of I, turned out to be a very heated political battle. Champaign-Urbana was ranked last by a legislative committee, but they ended up winning the bid anyway.

Jacksonville and Bloomington were furious, one supporter of the Jacksonville bid accused the "Champaingers" of bribing the legislators. Whatever the case, Champaign-Urbana (or technically the campus name is University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign) won and that was that.

Why this was done after ISU was already around, I don't know.

There's no way the bribery happened. Not in Illinois. 8D

The announcers in this VT/NC St game are beyond awful. Any two schlubbs on this forum could do better.

And Beck’s high powered offense has managed 3 points in 2 1/2 quarters against 2-5 VT. I sure do miss him.

Beth Mowins?
Matt Barrie and Dan Mullen.

Mullen is an idiot. NC St had a first down at midfield with a running clock and 4 minutes to go, with a 1-point lead and VT only had 1 timeout. Mullen says ‘will they let their young QB throw deep to put the game away?’

No, because a TD gives them an 8-point lead, which doesn’t put the game away. Running the ball 3 times gave them a first down with 2 minutes left, and then the game was over once they took a couple of knees. Which might explain why Dave Doeren is still coaching college football and Dan Mullen isn’t.

I've got money on Wazzu, but I'm so sick of idiots using their head like a battering ram that I don't care if he gets tossed. Stupid.

It's gotta be the helmets. We never even thought of tackling that way with the plastic jobs we wore in my day. Keep your head up.
