Week 8 Games Discussion

I’m watching Minny-Maryland. The Boat Rower waited until there were 4 seconds left in the half before spiking the ball to try a FG attempt. When it was blocked and returned almost to the other 30-yard line by Maryland, they had no time left for their own FG attempt.

Exactly the same situation where Niumatololo spiked the ball with 10 seconds left, had his FG blocked, and Cincy got a go-ahead FG because they had 1 second left after their return of the block to almost the same spot on the field.

I like Niumatololo, but if you’ve been a head coach for 15 years and are making over $2 million a year, you’ve gotta be better at clock management than that.

Watching another game from last week between two bad teams, NC State and Cryami.

NC St got the ball near midfield, down by 1 with about 3 and a half minutes left. They threw the bomb, incomplete, on first down, then failed to get a first down and turned it over on downs. Even if the bomb had worked, they would have taken the lead too soon.

So then Miami converts a first down with a running clock and 2:32 to play with NC St out of timeouts. They snap it under 2 minutes and hand the ball off on a running play, risking a fumble. After that, they took two knees to end the game. But for over 30 seconds after they got the first down, Manny Diaz didn’t realize that he could take a knee on all 3 downs to end the game. WTF was he thinking about while the clock ran, his postgame press conference or late-night dinner? He’s in his third year as a head coach and making over $3 million a year, and it takes him over 30 seconds to realize he can kill the clock with kneel-downs?

Earlier in the 4th quarter Cryami had run into the FG kicker on a miss, allowing NC St to get 3 points on the second attempt. But that was just returning the favor, since earlier in the game NC St had jumped offside before Cryami snapped a FG attempt, which led to a TD instead of a FG.

A few examples of how not to win, from a couple of ACC coaches. Doeren is in his 9th year, also making over $3 million.
