I was in the north end of c deck for the Hawkeyes’ 8th game of 1985. Only game I’ve seen in the Shoe when the visitor was ranked #1

Since I’m on the topic, the only teams to start AP #1 and finish the season unranked are:

1950 Notre Dame, 20 teams were ranked that year, first year of the preseason poll.

1961 Iowa, only 10 teams were ranked
1962 tOSU, only 10 teams were ranked
1963 USC, only 10 teams were ranked
1964 Ole Miss, only 10 teams were ranked

2012 USC, 25 teams were ranked

In 1998 tsun was pre season #5 and lost their first two games

just thought I'd mention it

Yep, they went from #5 directly to unranked since there was no poll after their first game. The 2 losses were 36-20 at #22 Notre Dame and 38-28 at home to #19 Syracuse.

In 2007, they went from preseason #5 to #13 (after App St in week 1) to not ranked in two weeks. The second game was a 39-7 home loss to Oregon.

Edit - this was wrong, they dropped out of the top-25 right after the loss to App St.

Ah, I found it! 1965 Playboy’s preseason pick was Iowa. The Hawkeyes went 1 - 9. Beating Oregon State in Corvallis for their only win. While it was a bit of a wild hair to pick them #1, other polls ranked them high, just not #1.

QB Gary Snook was a preseason Heisman hopeful. Coach Jerry Burns was fired and the Buckeyes beat them 38 to 0 in Columbus.

Playboy went out on a limb, the AP didn’t have Iowa in the preseason Top-10. Playboy had Burns predicted as Coach of the Year, and a couple of other Hawkeyes along with Snook on their preseason All America team.

More importantly, who was the centerfold in that issue?

It was either Lannie Balcom

or

Patti Reynolds

depending on the month the preview came out
