This ought to be taken into account algorithmically by the torrent clients, so that you don't get the effect of many leechers slowing the seeding process down to a crawl, but things rarely work in practice how they should work in theory.

I know it's an old question but.. the answer depends on the client the original seeder is using. Some (uTorrent, Deluge, vuze/Azureus, etc) allow a mode where no pieces are sent twice until the whole torrent is seeded, so the speed doesn't slow regardless of how many leechers there are. In this case your average speed may be slower but your download will finish sooner the sooner you get in on the action.
