So sorry @Mike80 and @AKAK. We just said goodbye to our 15+ year old mutt
Unless someone owns a kennel, pretty sure I own and have owned more dogs than most (6 currently)
The best therapy to deal with losing a pet.. is to get another very soon...
In fact, getting a puppy in the last year of your existing pet.. will be immense therapy for the troops..
First hand experience.. the new pup will sense sadness and will come to the rescue...
You won't forget how much your pup meant to the family.. it's a rough go.. much worse than non-pet owners understand...
Highly recommend this, and if it doesn't fit into your life, it's okay to do it on whatever timing makes sense.

We wanted a young dog in the final 1-2 years of my elder dog's life. He adored his older sister, but in his golden years he did not want an effervescent young dog, so we respected that. It also made it much easier to adopt an adorable new rescue dog shortly after he passed.

Grief is a personal and long road. It does straighten and flatten out though.

Condolences to all of you. It’s been about 15 months since we lost Brutus. We had a wonderful 15 or so years with him. A rescue dog, that was a Husky/Shephard/something else mix, he was the best do we ever had.

We still talk about him and his antics and he just creeps into my thoughts at the most interesting times. We’ve taken over care of my daughter’s Morkie, but I believe he will be the last. Brutus wasn’t much for pictures so this was a rarety.

We don't deserve dogs. Tomorrow is going to be a hard day for me, and it'll be even harder for my son Matthew, and my daughter, Ella.

They grew up with Sophie. Ella was 9 and Matthew was 7 when we got her. She's been there when things have been great, when things have been rough, when my mother unexpectedly passed away. Through COVID and divorces and injuries and stress and everything.

Total love. That's what a dog is....and that's all she ever wanted.

Tomorrow is going to be a hard day.
Hoping your week went ok. You’re right we don’t deserve dogs. They’re the absolute best and it’s not fair they don’t live very long. But we have to take comfort that they had a wonderful life.
