We Don't Deserve Dogs

Didn't know where to post this so I figured this was as good a place as any. I'm going to lose my boxer pup on Sunday. He's 10 years old but the last year has been hell for him. He was so healthy until we had an ACL repair and then just noticed he never bounced back.

Hands down the best dog I've ever had so this one is going to sting. Just isn't fair how fast time moves guys. I remember everything about the day we picked him up from Boxer rescue. From the cold temperatures to the ugly little turquoise sweater he had on to keep him warm (fit in the palm of my hand). Just overwhelmed that this moment is here already for my guy.

Anyways, we certainly don't deserve dogs. They make us better.

Sorry. Never any words. Just be with him to the end. They go down in peace when we are there petting them. They are so broken and afraid when we are not. As you say, we don't deserve dogs. Rescue another when the time is right and God bless.

@Captain Buckeye I feel for you bro... we have and have had MANY pups over our 43 years married... currently 5 (long story)
What my experience says.. get another one fast...
A new pup is amazingly therapeutic... will help everyone deal with the hurt that I pose can be as tuff as if it was a human...

When we lost one of the top 2 of all time... my oldest was a Sr in HS and was absolutely devastated... we were truly concerned... it was bad...
The new pup sensed it... and would not get out of his face... my son would bury his head in grief
and that pup burrowed and burrowed his head into his... demanding affection... it worked... and I learned a life lesson

Thank you both and yes the goal is to get another one as soon as we can. Luckily we have a second dog too but it's not going to be the same without my guy we are putting down tomorrow. It's incredibly sad but at least the choice is obvious for him. He's in really bad shape so this will also be a relief in a way because it's sad seeing the deterioration.

I love dogs. My father raised field champion beagles and I have bull terriers. My advice to this owner is that Rudy needs one of two things the first time he attacks you or your family: a) A loud voice, a strong hand and a newspaper that let's him know that he is not in charge and the possibility of an ass-kicking is at hand. b) If he attacks someone again, he needs to be put down before he injures someone for life and you go to jail for it.

We don't deserve dogs. Tomorrow is going to be a hard day for me, and it'll be even harder for my son Matthew, and my daughter, Ella.

They grew up with Sophie. Ella was 9 and Matthew was 7 when we got her. She's been there when things have been great, when things have been rough, when my mother unexpectedly passed away. Through COVID and divorces and injuries and stress and everything.

Total love. That's what a dog is....and that's all she ever wanted.

Tomorrow is going to be a hard day.

We're getting to the end on our fox terrier. He has some heart disease at age 16 really good overall quality of life still so nothing to do proactively but I see moments where he's a little short of breath and I feel his heart beat flutter on my lap. Other times he's just fine. Its hard to get to this part but I want to be as good of an owner as he's been a companion.

Unless someone owns a kennel, pretty sure I own and have owned more dogs than most (6 currently)
The best therapy to deal with losing a pet.. is to get another very soon...
In fact, getting a puppy in the last year of your existing pet.. will be immense therapy for the troops..
First hand experience.. the new pup will sense sadness and will come to the rescue...
You won't forget how much your pup meant to the family.. it's a rough go.. much worse than non-pet owners understand...

My wife, who suffered through a bout with fluish something last weekend. While in the bathroom ralphing... her dog brings his favorite toy and drops it it right next to her. Good boy, good boy.

I'm incredibly sorry for you and yours. I'm still a bit broken after looking our pup a couple of years ago. I'll be praying for your peace.
