WC Qtrs - Uruguay vs Ghana (Fri 2:30 ET, ESPN)

Lame? All things considered, that was pretty fucking awesome.

I figured if it came down to a shooting that Uruguay would have an advantage. Ghana's keeper is rather green an he looked it with the way he danced around and came off his line rathe than having confidence in his read like his counterpart.

I dont. Its kind of like a hard foul in basketball, you gotta make em make the free throws...

I dont know how much I like PKs, but these guys had played 2+ hours, so its not like they didnt have a chance to settle it in regular time.
But then again, PKs are a crap shoot and not a real display of the true talent of either team. It feels kind of like college football OT to me, I like it but I dont like it all at the same time...

I really wish they's use the behind the shooter view as the live camera angle during the shootouts.

I wouldn't take any trips to Accra if I were Suarez.

Nope, it's the same thing as an intentional foul in basketball or pass interference in the endzone. You can't award points for an action that didn't take place. Suarez knew the consequences of his actions... red card, penalty kick, out the next game. 9 times out of 10 that penalty kick goes in... luckily for Uruguay that particular one did not.

I was thinking the exact same thing. That would really allow people to understand how tough/stressful penalty shootouts are. Penalty shootouts are flawed, but I think that's the only way to end the match. If you had infinite overtime, the game could take 10 hours.

They do have it in hockey. An infraction that would usually result in a penalty shot becomes an automatic goal if the goalie is pulled.

Why should Ghana have to convert a penalty shot to score again when the only thing that kept them from scoring in the first place was an offense so egregious it gets the offender immediately tossed from the match.

I view this more like a third baseman tackling a baserunner headed home than I do an intentional foul.

Goal tending in basketball?


In lieu of a shoot out go to a golden goal format (non-golden goal OT that could lead to a shoot out if both teams score is just plain silly).

Every five or ten minutes take one player off the field for each team. Three to four players down and you will quickly get a winner.

No, I didn't see this play live. :wink2:

Cotton Bowl referees awarded a TD on this play after a guy from the sideline came onto the field to tackle the ball carrier.

The sideline tackle was unnecessary, since 1 defender looked to have an angle to make the play.

I'm all for the golden goal.

I like the take-a-man-off plan. But I think they could just do that after each 15 minute OT. If it wasn't tied to the between period stoppages, it would slow down the game.

Good point though basketball points are quite a bit more numerous than goals in soccer. I'd say one penalty would be quite a bit more harsh than the other one. If you add the goal then you have to take away giving the defender a card... giving a goal and a red card is a very severe punishment.

I'd like to see the golden goal back. Play the first 30 minutes full strength. If it is still tied after that take 2 or 3 off to open the field up for the rest of the overtime until someone scores (BTW, this would really hurt a team if a red card happened earlier in the game). Flip the field every 15 minutes.
