WC Final - Spain vs Netherlands (Sun 2:30 ET, ABC)

I support the Dutch, who will have nearly a home field advantage. But who knows? I thought Germany would win last night, but the team that won the previous two games did not show up.

Which Spain shows up? If they play like last night, then I don't like Netherlands chances. They have been far too sloppy in controlling the ball, especially in the midfield.

One thing is sure. The South Americans are gone. There will be no simulating on every play and no intentional cheap shots.

Steve, haven't you seen Robben go down awfully easily and embellish? Have you watched the type of fouls from de Jong? (Of course, BK will tell you that I'm simply intolerant of the Dutch :wink2:).

Portugal also dived repeatedly during group play. The type of soccer that you're objecting to is not limited to the South American squads.

The Spain-Germany game was very cleanly played, however. Spain's dominance in the midfield was impressive.

Paul is on a roll (he has picked 6 of 6 correctly) and in the finals he picks SPAIN:

Some bird in Singapore picked the Dutch; however, what does a [censored]ing bird know. Go with the octopus.

Forlan seems like a good guy. You watch him pick up the ball and set it down for an opponent's goal kick and the way he behaves generally. Then there is his background story.

But his team is atrocious. Last night, they obviously planned to signal for hand-balls repeatedly. I quit counting at ten but I think that it must have exceeded thirty times that an Uruguayan player signaled handball. Every replay showed that no handball occurred. It's a nice stunt. Eventually, in a critical moment, the ref is likely to call something that looks like it might have been a handball.

I don't know if you could hear the booing in your broadcasts whenever Suarez came near the ball. He was never a factor in the game.

I have seen nothing like the Uruguayans from the Dutch. Not once did I see a South African or American player pull these stunts.

Having had such a good opportunity to watch all of the world's best teams, if anything, my lasting memory of this World Cup will be how much the Uruguayans did not deserve to be in the second round and how much the Americans did.

The booing whenever Suarez got the ball was obvious and was commented on repeatedly by the commentators. I completely understood the booing and had no problem with it, actually thinking that Suarez deserved that treatment because of his post-game comments after his handball.

The play-by-play man, Ian Darke, made statements that I thought were way out of line about the fans. He said the booing was wrong, and made comments (paraphrasing from memory) that it showed a lack of knowledge and respect for the game. I thought that he shouldn't have said those things, and the studio commentators after the game said things about Suarez playing the role of the villain and that the booing didn't affect his play.

I don't know if it affected his play or not. He did just miss a goal at one point and didn't play badly.

In another thread I proposed a rule change for FIFA. On an intentional handball on the goal line where the goalkeeper had no chance at making a play and the handball stopped a certain goal, I'm proposing that the offending player be designated as the keeper for the PK, without being able to use his hands. That would make the chances of a PK miss extremely small, and highlight his offense (he'd still get a red card and be sent off immediately after the PK).
