Alternate title: Rebuild Misery...ended?

So... I've been kinda absent lately (not that I post much when I am around :)) because my old computer died, and rather than fix it, I just decided to build a new one.

pause for laughter.

Got everything together OK, but when I tried to play anythin using Direct3d, it'd go for a few minutes (rarely even as many as five) and kick me out of the program. I spent a solid two weeks trying to troubleshoot this damn thing... tried pretty much everything short of hardware replacement (thought it was the graphics card/drivers/BIOS/God only knows).

I think I got it fixed. Tested my RAM and it found errors. So I had to move the DIMMs around until I found a combo that gave no errors, and voila... sustained gameplay.

I'm pretty happy with it. Spent about $700 and got a 3x increase in framerate on Doom3 compared to my old system (2.4 GHz P4). Me likey.

Yeah, wish I'd realized that a week ago :)

I was seriously worried for a while. It's a pretty nice setup, but I still need to get a 2nd video card to get the full SLI rig going :) I figure this setup should be expandable enough to last me for several years without really falling behind. RAM's expandable up to 8 Gig, it's set up for SATA and RAID if I want to go that way. 3GHz Pentium D should be fast enough for a while, and I can actually cram in a full Gig of graphics power, if I care to shell out the bucks.

Basically, I'm feeling smug because I (seem to have) outwitted an inanimate object. Sad, really, but them's the breaks.
