Visiting Columbus for the First time

GopherFan22

Hi Buckeye fans,

My dad brother and I are gopher fans that will be traveling to Columbus for the big game on Saturday vs Michigan. We are huge college football fans and pick 1 big game a year anywhere in the country to visit and this year will be in Columbus to watch 1 of the biggest games of the season.

Are there any pre-game events on Friday that you recommend we attend?
Any good burger places in Columbus you recommend for food on Friday or Saturday?
Where will the GameDay crew setup and what time should we get there on Saturday morning?

Any info to help us get the full game day experience please let me know!

I'm not a big Jim H. fan so I'll be rooting for the Buckeyes!

Not near campus, but Thurman's cafe has an incredible burger. Be prepared to wait.

I don't know of any pre-game events that occur on Friday, however Buckeye fans will suggest attending Skull Session on Saturday. This takes place in St. John's arena two hours prior to kickoff. It's a pep rally featuring TBDBITL, a local high school band and the team walks through with a speech given by a player, Urban & a position coach.

As @briegg said, The Thurman Cafe is the place to go for burgers.

In regards to GameDay...

Also, I suggest being in your seats well before kickoff. Seeing the band enter the field & perform Script Ohio is not something you want to miss.

Others can provide their thoughts, but this should be a good start for you. Enjoy your visit!

1. Yes to Thurmans, and yes to waiting. We went at like 3 in the afternoon once and waited an hour for a table.
2. It's not "1 of the biggest games", it is THE GAME. I'm jealous, having only ever been to one game in person, and it was the Alamo Bowl laugher in 2004.

Hey Rodent... welcome to the 43210.

Sounds like you guys picked a good one this year. I hope you have a great time enjoying our Motherland.

One thing that you may want to check out on Friday is the WHAC. The Woody Hayes Athletic Center. You won't see much beyond the tip of the iceberg, but the atrium is something that a true fan of college football would enjoy.

Clearly, you're not gonna get behind the big doors, especially this week... but the atrium is worth the trip. Depending on when you go, you may see players and / or coaching staff coming through.

Rodent is in jest... hope you have a great experience.

Gopher fan,

You might want to check out the Ohio State/Marshall basketball game which starts at 7 PM Friday night:lol:

Seriously, if I were you on Friday night I would just sort of
go to High Street and just sort of walk around. There are plenty of bars and places to eat around campus. Usually on Friday night before The Game different members of the Ohio State University marching band will go around to different spots and play a few tunes so you might run into them.

Regarding Thurmans, while they probably have the best burgers in town they are located a little ways from campus so you will lose that if you go there after the game. I am sure if you ask people at the game or at the Skull Session Saturday morning you will get some more ideas regarding places to eat which are probably closer to campus if that is your preference.

Hope you enjoy the atmosphere! This is going to be one of the biggest college football games played since 2006, so be prepared for the place to be a madhouse.

I'm not sure how many big games you've been to, but I'm betting none of them will come close to this one in terms of attendance. There will be mobs of people everywhere. I'd suggest getting up earlier than you think you need to. GameDay starts at 7am and it's going to be bustling.

There's a big tailgate in the parking lot before The Game on Lane Ave. (where the big bridge is) that you may want to check out. Food/alcohol are both served here and there will be live entertainment.

If you keep walking toward the stadium from that tailgate spot, you'll run into some shops and things like the Varsity Club (bar) that you may want to check out if for nothing more than historical purposes. It will be jam packed.

I'd try to hit Buckeye Donuts on High St. before you leave. It's a staple and delicious. There will be a line.

Enjoy The Game! I'm positive it will be a memorable experience. I'll be there, so shoot me a message if you have questions and I'll be more than happy to help.
