Virtual Memory issue...

Folanator

Brawndo's got electrolytes...
I keep getting a warning that my virtual memory is maxed out. I have clicked on the bubble and had the computer try and clean it up, but that does not seem to fix it.

It happens mainly when I have a few windows open, AIM, websites, excell...but nothing that I think should stress out the system.

I have a Vio VGN-A150 laptop.

What do I need to move or delete to clear up the issue?

Help!

Could be too little RAM, to little Page File space, or too little hard drive space left. When you have a bunch of programs open, hit ctrl>alt>del and check the performance tab. If the page file size is more than, say, a third of the max (maybe a fourth), google a step-by-step tutorial for increasing it. If hard drive space is on the low side, clean it up as much as you can, and then make sure you empty the recycle bin.

I did that. My C drive is packed. I tried to move a bunch over to my D drive, that helped...a little. Cannot move the operating files obviously.

I have tried to look in my C drive files to see what is making it so large, but I am not seeing it. Could it be Temp internet files? Video I have streamed that are still there?

Sorry,I am such a dufus with some of this stuff.

Temp internet files can go.

In Windows Explorer, search C:// for *.tmp and delete all of that (a couple files may be in use and those can stay). *.bak and *.hlp might have things you don't want. Search *.avi, *.wav or various media extensions and delete video files you don't want anymore, probably including some help-type files you'll never need.

Search *.*, but hit "What size is it?" to look for the largest files only. You can probably zap some of those. Try setting the minimum as 1MB, then sort the results by size and delete or move whatever you can.

I always find programs I don't want and don't remember installing in Control Panel > Add or Remove programs.

Again, the memory won't really be free until you empty the recycle bin.

1. Click Start -> My Computer (or Windows Logo -> Computer if Vista)
2. Right-click your C: drive and select properties.
3. On the popup window will be the pie-chart showing disk use, just click the button to the right for Disk Cleanup.

When you have some downtime (like 2-4 hours), run the error-checking & defrag utilities as well, found under the "tools" tab for the drive properties.

Glary Utilities is free and good. One of the tools is "Disk Analysis," which has been very helpful. It will show you a chart of all your folders and which are biggest, or you can do it by file type and see what sorts of files are taking up the most space. I found a ton of .zip and .rar files taking up space unnecessarily, and a few duplicate folders.

Exactly what apps (and how many of each) do you have open when you start bumping against the memory limit?

When you go into Task Manager how much physical memory & virtual memory is being used when you have the problem?

How much RAM does your machine have installed?

What OS are you using?

Is your paging file being handled automatically by the OS or set manually by you?

How large are your physical HDDs and how much space is left on them?

When you say the "little bubble" to clear space do you mean the Disk Cleanup Tool?

CC Cleaner is a great app.

Control Panel/System/Advanced Tab/Virtual Memory Click change

This. How much free space do you have on each partition of your hard disk, and how much space did you start with on each?

I usually set the page file to around 3x the size of RAM if hard disk size isn't an issue. Also set the minimum and maximum values to the same thing. No need for the OS to be constantly resizing it.

C drive is 95% full + then some. I have to clean it up. I will try to see if I can nuke the wav, avi temp internet files. I am guessing that is the issue. Freeken recruiting vids and porn...

Thanks guys, most apreciated. I'll report back.

Virtual Memory

What exactly is virtual memory?

Memory that isnt quite memory or memory that isnt quite there, or imaginary memory? Computers only work because of magic. When the magic is gone, the computer--He No Work!
