Girl's Angry Father Hits Teacher's Aide

By MITCH STACY
The Associated Press

TAMPA -- An angry father who marched into a classroom and punched a teacher's assistant in the face said Wednesday he was protecting his 15-year-old daughter, who had accused the man of inappropriately touching her.

Dave F. Swafford, 42, was charged with felony battery on a school employee after he hit the 35-year-old aide in front of a class full of students at Lakewood Ranch High School near Bradenton on Tuesday morning, authorities said. He also was named "Father of the Year" by a local radio station for his actions.

"I'm not real proud of what I did," Swafford told The Associated Press on Wednesday. "You have to protect your children, and my daughter does not lie to me."

Because of the allegation, the school placed the assistant on paid leave Tuesday, school district spokeswoman Margi Nanney said. He has not been charged, but Manatee County Sheriff's Office spokesman Dave Bristow said deputies are investigating.

The man has been employed by the Manatee County School District since 1999 and has a clean personnel record, Nanney said. His primary job is "time-out" teacher, overseeing in-school suspension. His name is being withheld by the AP because he has not been charged.

Swafford, the part owner of an air conditioning company, said he came to the school to meet with officials about allegations made by his daughter and other female students about the assistant's inappropriate touching and conduct. When he saw that the man was not in the meeting, he asked his daughter to take him to the classroom.

"I wanted to know why the guy was in a classroom teaching after my daughter came forward," he said.

A verbal exchange became heated, and "I lost control," he said. He spent about 10 hours in jail and got out later Tuesday after posting bail.

The Tampa radio station that named him "Father of the Year" offered him and his family tickets for the Daytona 500 race.

"If some other parents would do this, maybe some of these pedophiles would crawl back under rocks where they belong," Swafford said.

not so fast "Father of the Year".....

it's been a great week for this area... first the fat kid beating up his grandma for beer and now this... both happened about 10 miles from here in Bradenton. Lakewood Ranch High School is about 2 miles from my parents house.

School board says sex harassment claims are false

BRADENTON - The Manatee County School Board held a press conference Thursday responding to the incident in where a father punched a teacher's aide who allegedly sexually harassed his daughter.

Superintendent Roger Dearing told reporters that they can prove the girl's allegations are false.

He says a surveillance tape shows that Lakewood Ranch High School Teacher's Aide Deon Mathis was not even in the room at the time the 16-year-old girl claimed he inappropriately touched her.

Dearing also says he believes the girl's motive is retaliation. He says Mathis turned her in for pouring a soft drink on another student.

Meanwhile, Mathis tried to file a restraining order against her father.

The father, Dave Swafford, punched Mathis after his daughter told him about the molestation allegations. Swafford was arrested on battery charges.

Mathis asked a judge for future legal protection against Swafford. In the request, Mathis stated that Swafford threatened to hit him again if he ever saw him.

The judge denied the restraining order, ruling there has to be two acts of violence in order to get a restraining order.

Mathis is on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the molestation investigation.

I don't what to think about this-if the guy actually did do this stuff, then good for the father. On the other hand, in my parents town, a longtime, well respected administrator is being dragged through the mud-and has been indicted-b/c of a lying foster child who has a history of making false claims of sexual abuse, and whose claims don't hold water. Even if a kid is lying, a teacher is presumed guilty until proven innocent for all intents and purposes-that's just the way ot is........

My daughters would've been in some serious hot water had they pulled a stunt like that...those types of accusations are too serious to be fucking around with just to get back at a teacher. I think the lying little bitch should get suspended as a minimum, if not expelled for the rest of the year.

The one thing that caught my eye was this:
The judge denied the restraining order, ruling there has to be two acts of violence in order to get a restraining order.
So, Dude A decks Dude B, but Dude B can't get protection until Dude A decks him again (or worse)? Why even have restrining orders then?

I thought the original post included something about other girls also making the same accusation? Are they all lying?

This girl's going to need a restraining order from the whoopin's she's going to get from her old man if she did lie to him about this - not to mention hopefully some charges filed against her.

If those girls are telling the truth, though.......

Can't jump to conclusions and at least the school board investigated it before they gave the guy a bum steer.

Ya can't blame a dad for overreacting when it comes to his daughter. Period. If the allegations prove false, so be it. I'd rather whoop some dudes ass and apologize than let my child be victimized.

If the allegations are, indeed, false, then oh well, the TA got his ass whooped, big deal. If they were/are true, he deserves sooooo much more...

the father is now suing the school system for 5 million dollars.

Father who punched teacher aide is suing

MANATEE COUNTY - Another blow from the father now nationally known for punching a Lakewood Ranch High School teaching assistant, but this one doesn't involve fisticuffs.

Dave Swafford is suing the Manatee County School Board, Manatee County Superintendent Roger Dearing and Teaching Assistant Deon Mathis.

Swafford's attorney says he is suing for, "a considerable sum of money”.

Swafford says he still believes his daughter, who accused Mathis of molesting her. It was after hearing her claim that Swafford punched Mathis. Sheriff's deputies say there wasn't enough evidence to charge Mathis.

Mathis has returned to the school. The girl has not.
