Per my above post, you can't use non-profitability as an excuse to for websites to pummel viewers with invasive ads. Sites should be allowed to not only sustain themselves but to turn a profit...they doesn't mean they should be allowed to rake in billions above cost by forcing viewers to sit through an ad for virtually every page/clip.

You know what helps?

Bitching about it.

You're changing the world, Mili!
In a way, bitching to the right source would indeed help. Unfortunately, it would take millions to bitch to YouTube, CNN, ESPN, etc., in order to effect change. But, if you think that my, or anyone else's, "bitching" about the proliferation of intrusive ads is a waste of time, feel free to fucking ignore this thread.

Feel free to fuck off and ignore my posts. They aren't changing because a bunch of baby boomers bitch about ads. You aren't their target demographic. My nephews are, and they're using YouTube for a main source of entertainment and information. They're on YouTube more than I'm on BP. They don't care about the ads, and, like jwins' cherry picked stats from not five years ago point out, their newer ad policy encourages advertisers to up their game to hook the kids. My nephews have actually asked me if I've seen particular commercials on YouTube.

No matter how much old people want something for nothing, it's not going to change radically anytime soon as long as my nephews, my gf's son, my four year old daughter, and anyone that uses YouTube and similar sites keep watching videos and advertisements...and it remains profitable.

TL; DR

You're old and the internet doesn't give two shits about your opinions.

 Fuckin' brilliant. CNN, YouTube, ESPN, etc., know jack fuck how old I am, what ethnicity I am, and how much I fucking make. The same fucking ads come up on those sites come up regardless of who visits. In fact, I had my daughter visit the same CNN page I was on, on her iPad while I was on a desktop...two completely different target age groups, genders, and viewing platforms, and guess what Einstein: The same fucking ad showed. Facebook, on the other hand, is fucking spooky-good on tailoring their ads on my account. It's because they know a ton about you (if you're even fairly honest about the info you enter for your account), and they track the shit out of your surfing habits.

And I'll say it again for your young, crab-infested bearded, pasty, attention-span-of-a-fucking-gnat ass: I don't mind ads, even if they fucking boarder/surround the entire page...just don't cover the content or force me to watch it. Despite it's being a really fucking simple concept to grasp, apparently some here can't. In fact, it is indeed "young fucks" like your nephews who are at the root of the problem, having no experience of the internet other than the last few years and think that is how it's always been and is the norm. And if they are using fucking YouTube as their "main source of information", then sorry to say your nephews are properly fucked.

I have zero problems with a site turning a profit...I do have a problem with them having every fucking byte of content hidden behind ads. By the way, if I'm so old and the internet doesn't give two shits about my opinion, then why should it even fucking bother to put ads on the pages I visit or the clips I want to see?

Does anyone you know in real life think you're funny or clever?

YouTube isn't just dudes doing squats and riding exercise bikes. There is a wealth of entertainment and information options if you know what to look for.

These kids we're talking about are the first generation to use the internet from the time they could read, you cross-eyed, roided out, blouse wearing, underwater turtle raping, unfunny, spandex wearing, pointy helmet loving, out of touch old fuck.

This latest installment in preference-driven ethics might be the worst yet. They're allowed to use ads to turn a profit, but when it crosses the arbitrary amount in your head, then it's wrong and they should not be allowed to do it. How much are they allowed to earn given the 1.65 billion purchase price?

There's also the matter of users choosing to profit from their videos. That's a big reason for the explosion in advertisements and revenue. Psy has earned nearly 2 million on YouTube, most of it coming from The Gangnam Style video.

The above article linked this brilliant (and mature) advertising approach"
Interestingly, Psy is making money every day not just from his own video(s), but those of other users from around the world. YouTube has a system for detecting when copyrighted material is being used in a video, and should it be found, the content’s owner has the choice of either taking that video down or getting a share of the advertising revenue. Often record labels will quickly remove copies of new singles, so as to centralize views to the one they have uploaded. Psy chose for others to be able to use his track, and is raking in money from the 40,000 or so parody videos, lyric videos and the like that all use “Gangnam Style”, though calculating how much is a daunting task.

I think this extends beyond Youtube, but PewPewPew makes 4 million a year in ad revenue (and was brilliantly satired on South Park a few weeks ago). This is why Amazon bought twitch for a billion dollars (and Google almost did).

Google knows quite a bit about who you are - as a web browser - across their many services including YouTube (and I'm not sure why you don't know this). Many of us go a step further and give them incredibly personal and invasive data from our gmail accounts. They also dive into the complex and intricate business of tracking users across multiple days and also remarketing to consumers to establish a brand without an actual conversion resulting from the ad deployment.

As for the alternative, I've harped on CNN's immature ad system many times. Meanwhile, you've yet to engage me on the costs of producing content for CNN beyond the one page view of one arbitrary video.

You've made it quite clear that you don't mind ads as long as you're able to ignore them easily, which makes the site little to nothing. Which is why YouTube has developed the art of advertising and tracked your movements beyond the actions of that one page.

p.s. Buckyle is not "young" (nor am I) in terms of ads

Because the elderly are much worse at closing those ads without clicking on them

Then why hasn't a single ad come even remotely close to any of my interests? Facebook constantly has ads related to triathlon activities, college football (almost always Buckeye-related, but occasionally they fuck up and have Michigan and Penn State stuff displayed, likely due to my browsing through BP), and other ads directly related to my Google searches.

So, the only way a site can generate ad revenue is to have intrusive, in-your-face, ads which prevent you from viewing the very content you want to see? A soon-to-be-58 single male has to sit through a 30-second clip for a family SUV? Yeah, that's accurate viewer-targeting. :slappy: Facebook has sold me several cycle-related items, and nearly sold me on many other items, because they're great at serving up ad content that I may be interested in, and most importantly, none of those ads keep me from uploading a photo, writing a post, etc. I may not be a spring chicken, but my web-page peripheral vision is still pretty good. You put an ad related to outdoor sports, Buckeye football, outer-island hotel deals, etc., on the periphery of the visible screen and it will catch my attention.

I'm quite adept at closing ads (when they allow you to close them at all...many of the latest have no user controls to mute, pause, or close them). The whole point is how ads are served.
